castor oil/meconium

I know people have used castor oil for years without too much danger or risk.

but i have been seeing some things about it giving the baby stomach problems in utero...... I know alot of babies pass meconium anyway and are perfectly fine... would this be a worse than normal case of passing the meconium?

I have seen a few people on here say they have/ are planning to use it....

whats the consensus? I am thinking of trying it. I am  3-4 cm and Dr. swept my membranes and said she thought and hoped i would go this week ... baby is measuring on the larger side but nothing giant. I have had some real contractions but 1 or 2 over the course of a whole day for the last week or so...

I was 9 days late induced with DD and had awful prodromal labor...and they had to use the vacuum because i couldnt push her out due to size... want to avoid all that if i can....

Re: castor oil/meconium

  • I have no experience with castor oil, and i personally would not use it.  In my mind...if it causes us to have possible cramping and diarrhea, why would it not cause the baby to?  Maybe i am totally wrong....but that's what i would think.

Plus.....i have been in delivery before and i cant imagine having diarrhea in the delivery room. :)

  • i was also a little concerned about diarrhea for delivery. most stories make it sound like you get the diarrhea and then the cramping and possibly contractions.... but still a concern!
  • I won't be using it until I reach my deadline.  I'm a VBAC and can't go past 41 weeks.  I went 15 days late with DD, so I have no faith that my body can do this on its own.  I had an long, awful induction (60 hours) and ended with a c-section.  There was meconium with DD, but she was fine.

While there may be some negative impact from Castor Oil, I consider the negatives of pitocin and a potential RCS to be worse.  My midwife is onboard with the castor oil, so I'm willing to give it a shot.  I'm not sure I would have done it prior to my due date, though.  I'm a pretty strong believer that baby will come when ready.

  • While it's normal to pass meconium, it's not completely risk free either.  One of the reasons I'm afraid to go way over is the increased risk of meconium, and seeing as I work in a NICU, the babies with meconium aspiration pneumonia tend to be some of our most critical patients.  Just something to think about.  It's all a very personal decision, and about weighing the pros and cons.  I don't think I will do castor oil, because I'll be induced at 41 weeks.  Which also scares me. :P

  • I drank 4 oz of castor oil one day before my due date with my daughter who is now 12. Yes, it gave me diarrhea, as in like all-day diarrhea but my contractions didn't even really start until after everything was "out" of me. And the diarrhea wasn't painful, which is a miracle for me considering I have IBS w/constipation and cannot even take Correctol or Exlax or anything because it makes me cramp. It did not cause intestinal cramping at all. I was just basically going to the bathroom all day. I finished it around 12 noon and around 5pm had my first contractions, which continued through the night. By 1:30am they were close enough together that I called the Dr and they told me to come in to be checked and to my amazement I was already 4cm dilated. (my contractions had been painless the entire time). Anyway, I fell asleep in hospital and woke the next morning to not much activity as far as labor goes but they broke my water and then labor started and she was born that afternoon around 2:55 with NO meconium whatsoever. It worked for me and it worked for my mom also. I should also mention they stripped my membranes a week prior to this and I lost my mucus plus a couple days after that. I may use the castor oil again this time, but this is my 3rd so hopefully I won't have to.

  • I used it 3 days before my due date.. I was already 3cm.  I had my baby girl within 7 hours of taking it!  My water broke 3 hours after I took it.  I never once had an upset stomach or a BM!  I also didn't go #2 on the table!

    May work for you!!!!

  • how much did you take??
