How much does your doctor discuss weight?

Compared to some stories here, I don't think mine does much.

At my first appointment, they gave me a handout with general weight guidelines.

At my 15 week, they mentioned not to worry I had lost a few pounds, I would gain soon.

At my 20, an offhand comment that my weight gain was "good."

Nothing today at my 24 week or any other appointments. So I'm just assuming it's all good. Just strange compared to what I seem to hear on this board about doctors getting all over you (either for gaining too much or not enough).

PS I did not find the glucose solution to be that bad. Then again I drank a lot of crazy shizz in college.

  • I have heard nothing. I heard two things in my previous pregnancy. One at 20something weeks when I had spent two weeks in a hotel and had a lot of juice for breakfast in the mornings I heard that my weight gain had been a little highish, and then my next appointment I was back to my normal routine and had either lost weight or put on nothing. We laughed about it. Man, I miss my old OB. She's not practicing anymore.

  • I see my ob/gyn every 4 weeks. I usually just get the offhand "good you've gained a few pounds" comment. that's it. I've been trying to be careful though and eyeing my weight at home.

  • My OB doesn't talk about it unless I brought it up. Weeks 1-16 I only gained 9 pounds and she told me that was perfect. 16-20 I had gained an additional 8 lbs and asked her about it and she told me it was a bit much and asked me if my eating habits have gotten worse. I told her they had and she told me to eat healthier and it should be fine. She doesn't really make a big deal about it. She told me that gaining more weight just means it'll be harder for me to lose after the baby.
    imageimageimage"Image">image
  • I asked, but she told me everyone is different. and that my body will do what natural as long as I am eating healthy. She told me if I wanted to gain 60+ pounds I could certianly go do so. but it will make me more uncomfortable and potentially make the baby too large to deliver vaginally. So it was up to me what kind of pregnancy I wanted. She said some women still eat healthy and gain 40 pounds and that is fine.

  • Not at all, unless there is a problem. Last pregnancy the doctor brought it up at 36 w saying he wanted me at a certain weight by delivery.
  • At every appointment she always says my weight looks good, at 22 weeks I had gained a total of 13 pounds she said I was right on track!!

  • Mine has never mentioned it. Im weighed and its noted, thats it.  I meantioned it at the first visit, that I wanted to keep a handle on it so I didnt have such a big baby again and he said not to worry about it.

  • Basically not at all so far. Just a single comment at my appt at 18 weeks that my weighy was stable and they'd like me to gain about 10 pounds during pregnancy.

I'm more upset that they have asked nothing about diet. Being weeks away from being a dietitian, I know I am hyper focused on nutrition, but I think it's pretty ridiculous that my doc has never asked about diet and has no clue I am mostly a vegetarian (occasional fish).

  • My doctor has never mentioned it. The nurse will say "Up one pound from last time" or "same as last time" as I am weighing in. I have had trouble gaining weight so far because I've been having a weird appetite Tongue Tied

My doctor hasn't asked about my diet either. They had some information on another handout. I am glad he hasn't asked though because he would not enjoy the answer, lol.

My first appointment when they go over all the initial info he tells me the expected weight gain.

With LO I gained 50 and maybe even a little over. Never made one comment to me about it.

  • My doc hasn't mentioned it at all. I'm guessing that he wouldn't bring it up unless he was concerned.

  • At childbirth class they kept harping on eating protein, so that was a good reminder, especially since I was pretty much meat free my first 17 weeks.

  • She discussed it at my first app. With DD1 there was just the initial discussion as well.

  • Not at all. I know that it is written in my chart and if it were to start being a matter of concern they would address it but so far everything centers on a healthy diet and moderate pregnancy-safe exercise.

I don't even know what I gained with DD. I have a rough estimate based on my own general calculations but even that was only from what I weighed around the time I got pregnant and what I weighed at the hospital the day she was born.

Doc hasn't mentioned it, but I know I've gained too much.  He did tell me to start incorporating about 20 minutes of walking or something into every day life.  But not an actual fat talk.

  • Not at all.  In fact, I don't even get weighed at my regular appointments.  When I asked, they just said that's standard practice here now, and they don't care how much you weigh as long as everything else looks good.

  • My OB mentioned it one time with DD because I had gained 13lbs in 4 weeks and again this time because at 19 weeks I've only gained 1lb. Not a talk, just mentioned it. She's not concerned and nether am I. I've had little to no appitite with this pregnancy. I've only just started getting more hungry within the last week.
  • Hasn't said a word about it. I lost right around 20 lbs at the beginning and I haven't gained any of it back, but I can definitely afford to lose some weight. I think if I wasn't currently pregnant, between eating better, and laying off the booze, I would have lost a lot more than I have.

I'll prob ask about it during my next appt.

  • My OB discusses it every.single.appointment (which is every two weeks now).  She is concerned because of twins and that she thinks I've gained 11 pounds.  Unfortunately she is going by the pre-pregnancy weight I told them which was me, at my house, naked and lower than they would have had on their scale at the time.  So I've only gained about 4 pounds overall.  Because of this there will be an U/S every two weeks for a while to check on the growth of the babies to make sure everything is alright.

I assure her I am eating as much as I can and not skimping on the calories (I make sure to eat healthy, but more of a full fat version).

  • She's never discussed weight with me, but I also don't gain a lot of weight while PG. I'm sure if I gained too much, she'd probably mention (but not dwell) it.

  • My midwife discussed how much she would like to see my gain at my first appointment.  15 lbs, because I'm already WAY overweight.  Just this morning she asked me what my pre-pregnancy weight was so she could calculate total weight gain.  She didn't say good or bad this morning, but DH thought that she was pleased with my gain (about 1 1/2 lbs).  I was a little worried about this appointment, because I've been eating like crap lately due to work travel and indulging a little too often in sweets and other junk and I kinda feel like a whale.

  • Not at all.  I actually discuss most everything with his nurse.  She's also family and awesome to talk to.  With my first I gained the typical "25-30" rule.  With my second I only gained 13 (and nothing was different between the pregnancies) and so far I just started to gain since my 16 week appt.  The nurse told me at my 16 week that now its time to start gaining, lol.  I'm sure if I was gaining too much they'd say something, but that's never been an issue, lol

  • It has been mentioned in 2 of the 4 appointments.  One because I gained quite a bit quickly, the next because I was on track but they still wanted me to be cautious.  Last pregnancy I don't think it was mentioned once.

  • They didn't bring it up until my appointment at 18w, when they told me I wasn't gaining enough.  Today they reminded me that they want to see me gain 30lb by the end of the pregnancy.  I think they wouldn't have said anything about it at all had it been fine.

  • He mentioned it once since I had lost 10 pounds. He never mentions it.  I guess because I haven't gained anything yet.  He may mention it next week at 24 weeks because he wanted me to start gaining a little this tri-mester.

I was seriously stressed about my weight this month because I had gained 7.5lbs last month and I got side-eyed.  So I completely cut out fruit juices from my diet and gained 2.5lbs this month.  I personally just think my body needed to gain the weight.

I do keep my weight in check just because I've always been active and a healthy eater so I do put importance on weight.  That's just me being me though.

DUDE.  Even if you have gained 11 lbs, that is actually lower than normal for 22 weeks, let alone with twins.  Why are some doctors such jerks?

Well, I have twins, so I NEED to gain weight and she is concerned that I am not eating enough.  She doesn't think I have gained too much... she thinks I haven't gained enough.
