Talk to me about oversupply and block feeding

I am dealing with engorgement and an oversupply which I think came from having to feed, pump, and supplement early on.  The LC has me feeding 2x's on each side and then switching. I have frozen milk so I do not want to pump and save the oversupply until I can get my supply to regulate and stop being in pain.

How long should it take to regulate doing the block feeding?  Is it true that with a regulated supply I should not feel too full/engorged unless I go too long between a feeding?   That would be amazing!  Once my supply regulates can I offer both sides again?

DD only gained 3oz last week which is low.  Could that be a result of the oversupply and getting too much foremilk?  How do I get ger sucking stamina up?  She is a lazy sucker since she is used to milk pouring in.  When she decides to be done she clamps her mouth shut and nothing I do gets her to keep going.  I was so happy to be full time BF, but I feel like I am failing her with her low weight gain :(

Re: Talk to me about oversupply and block feeding

  • I think I can help with a lot of your questions as I just went through this.

First, block feeding worked wonders for me in regulating oversupply. Once I got it under control, my breasts do not hurt unless I go too long between feedings. I am still having some leaking but it has decreased dramatically.

To block feed, you are supposed to keep offering the same breast over and over for a certain period of time. I believe they recommend starting with 4 hours before switching to the other breast. For me, this wasn't long enough. I had to increase this to every 6 hours. It took a few days but worked for me. So, offer leftie for 6 hours whenever DD wants to nurse and when the 6 hours are up, switch to rightie for the next 6 hours. (Or whatever time frame seems to work for you). Note that your "off" breast will feel engorged so you will probably have to hand express some to give yourself relief. While it will hurt like hell for a day or so, it will eventually regulate.

What's great about the blockfeeding is that DD will eventually get the hindmilk. If you offer leftie and she nurses for say 5 minutes and then refuses, she may only be getting foremilk. However, if an hour later she's hungry again, you offer leftie and if you haven't had another letdown, she should get the hindmilk.

Hope this helps! A great resource for all things BFing is Kellymom.com. A lot of us use it! :)

  •  Hi your a may momma too, first off at this age a 3oz weight gain is normal after the 3 week growth spurt a baby can slow down for a week or two. You are still doing great!! Also at this age it's normal to still feel full even if you don't go long between feedings, I know my boobs stil letdown at random times or when I think about lo not just when lo wants to eat so then they feel awfully ful.

Block feeding helped us a lot now he only gets way too much every once in awhile not every feeding.  Also I have never fed any of my kids off two boobs per feeding but around two months my body figured it out and I didn't feel over full between feedings.

Dont worry you are doing a great job feeding your lo

All of this. If you want to do block feedings, start with 2 feedings per side and go from there. LO only takes one side per feeding still at 10m. H

Around 8weeks is when I noticed things settled down, supply got regulated, 6wk growth spurt was over.

  • I didn't do block feeding until about 4 months when my letdown became just way too forceful.  I started out just alternating one side each feeding for a few days, but then decided to do 3-hr blocks.  Since he feeds every 2 hours, I would do the same side twice, then switch.  It took another week but it worked.  Now, I just alternate each side again and only feed one side at a time.
