Has anyone read about this? I have just heard about this. Apparently the chemicals used in all mattresses break down over time and they are finding a link between SIDS and the fumes coming off of crib mattresses.
I haven't seen any actual peer reviewed studies that support this theory, only statements from respected SIDS groups condemning the websites that promote this theory.
From what I can tell it's just a scam to sell mattress wraps. If you can find a peer reviewed study supporting the idea I'd like to see it though.

There has been evidence to support this, however not enough is known right now to determine if there IS a link. Ultimately, keeping baby on their back, buying an airtight, FIRM mattress and maybe an organic mattress pad should work.
We're a post SIDS family, so we tend to be more paranoid than others. There wasn't enough evidence to get us to buy an organic mattress.
Furniture and mattresses do off gas. It's usually formaldehyde that is off gassing. Ever notice the smell new furniture emits? Especialky from Ikea? That's off gas. It's also the " new car smell" when you buy a car...from the chemicals in the upholstery and glue. It dissipates over time and goes away...just has to air out.

This. I've never read anything about SIDS connection but it certainly can't be healthy to breathe this stuff in. We found a reasonably priced organic crib mattress but you can also air out any mattress, crib or adult, (outside if possible) which does reduce off gases.
