VBAC

Advice

Hello ladies,

My cousin is due with her 3rd in August and her 1st child was C-section due to being breech, 2nd was RCS since her Dr did not want to to a VBAC. Her 2nd is 11years old and she asked her Dr if it was possible to try VBAC but he said her uterus can rupture and wher baby can suffer severe brain damage as a result.

I know that is a very stupid remark but i was just wondering of anyone knows the odds of that happening. I tried google but figured you ladies are a lot more informed and not biased.

TIA

Re: Advice

  • She needs to get a second opinion.  I am not sure what happened that resulted in her first c/s nor do I know what type of scar she has.  But ACOG as recommended VBACs even for those who have had two c/s's.  It's very hard to find a provider willing to do it but people  (even on this board) have.  Getting a second opinion wouldn't hurt.  Many of us changed providers to a more supportive one.

  • According to the best research (a New England Journal of Medicine article), the risk of rupture in VBAC is 1/2 of 1% as long as labor is not induced. Even when rupture occurs it's usually minor and both mom and baby are fine. This study found that the fetal brain damage outcome happened something like 14 times in 15,000 VBACs. The risk is much, much smaller than the risk of an amnio, which doctors recommend all the time.

  • Her 1st c/s was planned due to her son being breech.

Thanks ladies...I hope she is able to get a second opinion
