Is $5,200 typical for an ADHD eval at a university hospital?

Holy Crap!!

I'm in shock that it costs this much!!

Just getting the bills for my son's eval and that is the total.  Of course we have insurance, which isn't fantastic so we still have to pay a fair share, but holy jeezus!!!!

We had an ADHD eval done a couple years ago and it wasn't nearly as much- if I remember correctly, only about 1,000.

But, $5,000????  Brutal...

Re: Is $5,200 typical for an ADHD eval at a university hospital?

  • that's insane.

Is it just me?  I feel like that is a complete waste of money.  The majority of the fees were for "room charges"- that is, a plain ol' room with a desk in it for the testing to take place.  Granted, one of the tests was on a computer, but the charge for 3 hours in the room was $1275.  x4  + physicians fees.

oh, and I should clarify-I am not saying that I wish I hadn't done the eval, just that all that money, that someone, us, the insurance company, could have been better spent, right?

  • No doubt money well spent...it's just I am thinking about it in a way of considering all those that are not able to access top-notch evals for their kids.

I mean, it's pretty much completely unlikely one would get such a thoughtful eval through the school, right?

And I also just think about the practicality of the monies...similiar to when I had my second baby and looked over the charges...a $57 dollar pad (sanitary napkin)?  REALLY?  A $70 squirt bottle?  C' mon.

It's just that health is so f'd up anyways, why does everything seem so inflated in price?

I am very happy with our eval and feel it will help us greatly- but how it's worty 5k is beyond me.  Is the Dr.s work (maybe 10 hours or so) worth thousands of dollars?  They didn't cut open a brain and perform surgery.

Again, not complaining, just kinds blown away by it.

  • I think it's crazy, but that's just me. We've only had DD tested by her psychologist and I don't remember how much that was. Of course, my husband is the CEO of a medical device company, so I shouldn't be shocked at all. Healthcare and insurance is a crazy world...

Can I ask why you had him tested again? Or is this the first set of tests?

  • we had him re-tested for concerns due to ADHD and whether or not the 1st dx was complete or not.

    2 dx said ADHD, only.

Good to know...I had never considered having her retested...it seemed like such an obvious Dx, so when it was what we thought, I just kinda left it at that. :)
