Don't forget to remove your car seat infant insert!

With our babies getting bigger I just wanted to remind/point out that many (most?) infant inserts in the car seats have a weight limit. The one on my Chicco Keyfit needs to come out once they weigh more than 11 lbs. Apparently they're only crash tested to a certain weight and if your baby weighs more than that they can compress the padding too much, making them not safe in the case of an accident. I didn't notice this in the manual last time until I stumbled upon it and a lot of other posters hadn't noticed either. If it's like the Keyfit's, you CAN still leave the head support in, it's just the separate body padding that comes out. Just a friendly PSA!

  • Holy crap. You're right. I didn't think of that as an insert. I thought it was part of the seat that was removable for washing. I'm glad you pointed this out!

I know, it seems like part of the seat, right? It's so hard without it. :(

At first, I thought you meant one of those head cushion after market things. Maybe this will make him sweat a little less now though!

  • Thanks for the heads up.

I just read the manual for mine and all it say is to "remove the infant insert as your child grows".  Umm, at what height or weight??  Thanks for being specific, Safety 1st.  Irritating.

  • Oh good, I'm glad you have the same car seat as mine so I don't have to look it up. lol. I've been noticing she was getting snugger and wondering when that was supposed to come out.
  • I'm glad you posted this! My chicco keyfit is a hand me down from my cousin, so I've never had a manual.

  • Someone mentioned this to me today. I had no idea that thing came out of the KeyFit 30. Glad others know about these things and share!

  • I had to remove ours after his one month appt. It's good up to 11 lbs.

I just looked around on google and one website said that you need to leave the head support in when they are tiny for side-impact protection. Another website was comparing the keyfit with the b-safe and it compared how the insert has to be removed at 11 pounds while the b-safe head support is removed at discretion of the parent.

  • So it's OK to leave the head part in the Keyfit? I took out the lower part, but they're still really bobble-headed, so I would like to leave the head part in if it's safe to do so.

  • I am so embarrassed that I have no idea what you all are talking about. Are we just talking about the cushion-y U shape things that go around their heads? Cause DD's car seat came with two and she have already grown enough to wear we had to take out the smaller U but we still have the bigger one in there. Is that what we're talking about here or something else that I have no idea about?

This seat has the head padding that can remain in as long as it fits (because it doesn't affect the straps or buckles), but the bottom set of padding needs to be removed at 11 pounds.

  • We have a BabyTrend car seat (I think that's what it is at least...?) that is a hand me down from my SIL. It just has the head insert. I took it out last week because I noticed LO kept slumping his head forward with it in there, and without it he rests his head on the side of his seat. Does anyone know if this is wrong of me? I know he's over 12 pounds, so if there's a whole 11 pound limit thing then he's over that but I'm pretty sure y'all were talking about body supports and not for their head. He is still a tiny bit bobble-headed, but it's like his huge head couldn't fit in the hole of the head support thing properly.

Oh phew! Our seat doesn't have any of that fancy stuff in it! Just the 2 head surrounds, one of which we have already had to take out like I mentioned.

We bought a different head support for our baby trend, the one that came with it sucked. Baby Trend seats don't have the insert though. So don't worry about removing anything.

  • well, crap. I just washed it because of a blowout...and now I don't need it? thanks for posting.

maybe I should start my own thread about this, but... is anyone's waist straps too low (on the legs instead of the waist)? it's so annoying...maybe it will be better without this cushion, eh? trying it tomorrow when I take her to her 2 month.

THIS! THANK YOU for posting- my LO sweats awful in the seat and then screams- I was ready to look into a different brand. Maybe this will make him a bit happier!
