Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Chronic stuffy nose and ENT

Our LO has had a stuffy/runny nose pretty much since birth. Our MD told us in the past that teething and other factors can sometimes cause this in young babie and if by 9 months he hasnt outgrown it we should see ENT. Well we were at ER this weekend for croup and the MD advised us to see the ENT regarding his chronic stuff nose. So I made the appointment and I'm wondering if anyone else has gone through this and can tell me what to expect. It is also an allergy MD office so I'm wondering if they do allergy testing there also. Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Chronic stuffy nose and ENT

  • mine are chronically stuff, and all I'm ever told is that it's a virus and to use the humidifier.  I'm really PO now that I read your post.  I can't believe my doctors never mentioned anything to me, I'm going to ask the next time I go for their well-baby visits.

My DD tends to get really stuffy when she's getting ready to cut a new tooth. She had a fever for almost a week straight, had a cough, snotty nose...the works. I took her to the doc, who called it viral. Humidifier...blah, blah, blah. Fever finally broke one day, and I noticed a tooth had popped through. All was well again!

  • We are going through this same exact thing.  My DD has had a chronically stuffy nose since she was about 2 weeks old.  At about 4 months, they did a scope of her nose at the ENT and found nothing... then they said she could be allergic to her milk based formula so I switched to soy.  That didn't help... then they said it could just be one cold after another... But I pushed and PUSHED and my doctor finally sent me to National Jewish to a specialist.  Last week DD had allergy testing and it wasn't that bad.  It went super fast and by the time DD figured out what was going on, it was over.  We found she was allergic to cats and dogs (we have both) so we are trying to figure out if we need to find new homes for them.  But my doctor wasn't convinced that this is the problem.  So even though she rarely spits up, my doctor scheduled DD for an Upper GI test.  That was this morning.  The Xray tech confirmed that she has SEVERE reflux.  Waiting to hear back from our doctor on next steps.  Hang in there... I know how frustrating and annoying it can be!  Don't give up until you get answers.

USCBERRY- We were thinking allergy testing too,we have a dog, but we were thinking he was stuffy even in the hospital so it couldnt be the dog, but maybe it is! Does your LO spit up alot?? My thinking was if he was allergic to his milk wouldnt he have reflux and spit up? But maybe it could be that too. I am just so tired of him sounding the way he does, I feel like it must be miserable for him to be all stuffed up all the time and I just want a definite answer, not humidifier, nasal spray, suction, etc. Thanks for the info, I feel more prepared knowing the steps you've gone through. Hope your DD is feeling better soon!

  • Our DD is stuffy anywhere she goes... school, grandma's, etc so we really dont think her dog allergy is the culprit...

And no, she NEVER spits up... only like once a month at the most.  And after the allergy test, we found out she is not allergic to milk or soy so it wasn't that either.

When I was watching the GI x-ray this morning, the tech pointed out the reflux so I am sure that is what is happening... but I am still unclear if that is causing her stuffiness.  I mean, she has NO other symptoms of reflux so it's super confusing.

It is just so frustrating... I don't know about your situation but DD never sleeps through the night because she can't breathe.

I hope we both get answers soon.

  • not my LO, but me - almost my whole adult life.  I've had 2 septoplasties (sinus surgeries) for blocked sinuses and deviated septum's.  It's getting bad again.  I will not do the surgery again.  Apparently when there's a blockage, mucus doesn't drain and you have a permanent cold.  I use the NeilMed rinse bottle daily to help.  IMO, doctors always tell people it's allergies.  Everyone I know has an allergy.  I think it's BS so they can sell allergy meds to people.  There are tons of allergens in the atmosphere.  Everyone will sneeze at dust, so everyone has an allergy.  Humidifiers and rinses will help temporarily, but surgery is the only way to correct an actual blockage, and that may not even hold permanent.  As for infants, it's doubtful they have these kind of problems yet, so they're probably just getting used to the atmosphere.

I hope we both get answers soon too! It is the most frustrating part so far for me being a new mom, it seems to interfere with everything, feeding especially he needs to take deep breathes because he's basically holding his breathe to drink the bottle!

Luckily he sleeps through the night, just not soundly he snores constantly and his a restless sleeper which means I'm up half the night listening to the monitor.

And as for the allergies, I have a lot of allergies, food and environmental, but I agree too that our LO is like this everywhere we go, there hasnt been a situiation in which there wasn't relief, so I'm thinkin it's not allergies for him either.

Keep me posted on her progress and I will do the same

  • Now they think it's her adenoids.  Waiting to get scheduled for xrays.    I will be THRILLED if we get an answer finally but annoyed that it's taken 10 months... grrr.

Any news on your LO?  Sounds like he has similar symptoms.
