I am 18 weeks pregnant with my twins today! We went in for my
every 2 week cervival check Wednesday and found out my cervix was
opening. They sent me for an emergency cerclage right away. I was
under general anestesia and the doctor said that my cervix was not
only funneling, but that I was up to 1cm dialated and one of the
babies sack's had to be pushed back in a bit in order to get the
McDonald cerclage in. The doctor said that she is happy, but that I
am not out of the woods yet.
I am on strict bedrest ad will have a follow up appointment and
cervical check on Tuesday. I just wanted to hear others experienes
and ask a few questions.
1. What are the chances of me making it to around 37 weeks now that
I have had the funneling, minor dialation and cerclage?
2. At what point can I feel good about the cerclage working? On
Tuesday at my follow up appointment what should I hope to see.
3. Has anyone had to do bedrest for this long with or without twins
and has it worked out? If you had your baby/babies before 30 weeks
what was the reason?
4. Do you have any advice for me or anything that you can think of
that I should be requesting from my doctor test wise?
I really appreciate all of your suport as always.

Re: Emergency cerclage at 18 weeks due to IC
1. What are the chances of me making it to around 37 weeks now that
I have had the funneling, minor dialation and cerclage?
I had a cerclage with my twin pregnancy and my last singleton pregnancy. I had funneling, dialation and was having my water bag starting to come out with my singleton. I made it to 35 weeks and had to be delivered due to HELLP/preeclampsia. With my twin pregnancy, I delivered at 32w4d due to PROM.
2. At what point can I feel good about the cerclage working? On
Tuesday at my follow up appointment what should I hope to see.
They should have done a u/s the next day to look at placement, according to the protocol of my peris. I would say as soon as you know that you are good there, I'd be good with it working.
3. Has anyone had to do bedrest for this long with or without twins
and has it worked out? If you had your baby/babies before 30 weeks
what was the reason?
I was on bedrest with my twins from 7 weeks on. I was on modified bedrest in the beginning due to hyperamisis and the iv attached to me and strict bedrest at 18 weeks due to IC and had them at 32w4d.
4. Do you have any advice for me or anything that you can think of
that I should be requesting from my doctor test wise?
FFN's may be a good thing after 24 weeks, however, a positive one isn't a true indicator, IMO. I was positive from 24 weeks until I delivered at 32w4d. Negative is good, positive isn't always bad....
I'll give you my experience. My cervix started to shorten at 16 weeks, and I was put on strict bedrest. By 22 weeks it had all but disappeared, I was funneling, my baby boy's sac was hanging out some and I was dilated 2cm. I continued on bedrest until my water broke at 29w3d and I had them at 29w4d. They were born at 3lbs3oz and 3lbs 2oz and spent 45 and 50 days in the NICU. They are healthy and happy babies at home now.
My only advice is to enjoy each day and just live day to day. There are no guarantees with a cerclage. (Mine was even a double one and they both broke) Sometimes your cervix has a mind of it's own, and sometimes medicine can stop it.
1. What are the chances of me making it to around 37 weeks now that
I have had the funneling, minor dialation and cerclage? I had my cerclage at 21w6d due to being dialted to 4cm with baby A's bag of waters hanging out...I was put on permanent BR in the hospital for 3 weeks then on strict BR at home for the remainder of my pregnancy with weekly cervical checks and stress tests. I also had a pessery inserted at 28 weeks to help relieve some of the pressure from the babies on my cervix. MY Dr didn't see any problem with me making it to 34-36 weeks, but my water broke VERY surprisingly at 29w6d when I rolled over in bed...I'd had a GREAT appointment the day before where my cervix had actually lengthened for the FIRST time.
2. At what point can I feel good about the cerclage working? On
Tuesday at my follow up appointment what should I hope to see.
I never once questioned my cerclage working after I did some research and talked to my Peri about it. My biggest concern was my PTL that I was having...I was on some pretty big drugs for that. Fun, I felt like a OLD man with all the drugs I took daily to keep my PTL in line.
3. Has anyone had to do bedrest for this long with or without twins
and has it worked out? If you had your baby/babies before 30 weeks
what was the reason? My water on Baby A broke. I was on BR for almost 9 weeks.
4. Do you have any advice for me or anything that you can think of
that I should be requesting from my doctor test wise? I am assuming you have a perinatologist and that they will be monitoring you weekly, right? At what point is hospital BR a possibility? How close do you live to your hospital? WHo is going to be a person you can call during the day if you have an emergency (My DH works about 40 min from home so that was a concern for us)...how avaliable is YOUR Dr, not a DR from his/her practice? It helps to have 1 point person so to speak. Where is the best LEvel 3/Level 4 NICU in your town should you need to send your babies there? YOu need to find a Pediatrician NOW and start talking to them about your babies/issues/concerns (this was the first thing we did after I was released from the hospital...I asked my peri for recommendations, he gave us 3 and shockingly enough the one we chose is his pediatrician for his twins...she is a practicing neonatologist AND a pediatrician.
GL...as I told you in your other post...get some great books, movies, and start lining up friends/family to come visit you and often. BR gets boring and repetative....trust me on that one...at least I could go outside on my patio from time to time, but with it being winter, that's not an option for you. Feel free to page me if you need something....
