GTKY - Fav wedding DIY

So, I've been going to way too many weddings lately, and it is making me a little nostalgic for our wedding, almost three years ago.  I enjoyed our last GTKY, and I know we have some crafty ladies on this board, so I think this would be fun.

What is your favorite DIY project you did for your wedding? (if you aren't married, you can use any other special event like a shower, party, etc). PIP preferred, but not required!

Re: GTKY - Fav wedding DIY

  • I did a really cute flip flop bin with hand made labels for sizes. I think that was the most fun to put together and looked nice on the dance floor.

My wedding was almost 4 years ago, it seems so long ago already!

  • My invites were my absolute favorite DIY. I love them so hard and I put so much work into them (only for them to probably be thrown away.. but anyways..) There's more pics in my Planning Bio

I also really loved my DIY flowers:

  • I made fish shaped chocolates for the favors, they were a big hit and looked great, also I decorated plain vases to put on the head table to put the bridal party's flowers in, they turned out pretty and my bridesmaids got to take them home with them.
  • I am not a crafty person, so I was very proud of these two!   They will probably look like no big deal compared to some of the replies, but I was proud of myself for doing something!

I made these ribbon boards to hold the placecards:

And I made these table name prints:

The only other thing that was DIY for our wedding was our program, which I designed and printed.

I cannot take credit for the ideas, but I did a whole bunch of diy things to save money. We got married in the middle of July on Lake Travis in TX. We got ratan fans and attached ribboned handles and also made labels for water bottles for during the ceremony.

For the place card holders, I used wine corks, but I had no clue I could buy the corks...for over a year I made DH and I drink wine so we would have the 90 needed corks...

    That's too funny!

We got married in fall so as soon as the fall colors came out, my mom and I got a lot of silk flowers and I made my own bouquet and bridesmaids bouquets.  Part of me wishes we used real flowers, but I get to look at my bouquet every day now that it decorates our piano and it looks just as fresh as it did 4.5 years ago.  Seeing it still so pretty and not dead and brittle makes me glad I went silk.

    GO HOKIES!

  • I did several projects, but my favorite was the centerpieces. My dad and I built the planters and I grew the wheatgreass. Then I had each side of the family pick out pictures of my husband and I as children. A different pair was put on each table. image second favorite were the invitations and programs. I made a similar style as a PP with the pocket. I could only find a picture of the programs though. I took out the names so haleymay won't stalk me... :)image

  • Wow, you guys are awesome!

We hiked a mile to the top of small mountain, which is where DH proposed to me.  As a result, we had a super small wedding, less than 10 guests.  We paid a minister who didn't know us to marry us there.  My mom was overseas so couldn't be there, so I put her picture on a stick so she could be "present" and then she called in on my cell phone to listen to the ceremony.  The minister, however, didn't realize she was on the phone and thought my mom had died.  LOL  Best of all, I wore my wedding dress (it was knee length) and got married in my hiking boots.  :)

The picture on a stick was the extent of my creativity and since the minister thought my mom was dead, I'm not sure that it was a success.  ha ha

(Edited to add: My husband made a wedding cake and carried it in a cooler to the top of the mountain and surprised me, so I think he wins the creativity award for that day in our relationship for that alone! )

  • jeez - it was over 7 years ago that we got married - and I had 2.5 years to plan.

    I DIYd everything!!

We cooked the rehearsal dinner.  It was BBQ themed (we had a pig-pickin).  We stamped little black ants all the way up the table runners.

For the reception - I made all the favors and packaged/decorated them. (Little 3 tier fudge wedding cakes).  Sewed the decorative cuffs for the bouquets. Made the jewelry for the bridesmaids.  Decorated the place cards.  Made the decorations for our getaway car.  Made the guest book.  And my fav - made the wedding cake.

Agree, that is beautiful!  And looks better than quite a few 'professional' ones I've seen!

  • I am FAR from crafty, and haven never really made anything myself before.  We were married in Hawaii and saw this idea in a magazine.  I copied it exactly, even down to the clear case from Crate and Barrel.  I LOVE it! I actually put it all together in my hotel room the night before my wedding, glue gun and all.  It wasn't as easy as I was expecting, especially since my dog had eaten one of the little sand dollars.

I think this is really cute! I wish I'd thought to do something similar.
