To the SMs who are worried about new baby

I wanted to share for the step moms who are having babies and worried about their step children.

I just had my son in January and we are trying to teach him sign language.  He's still too small to sign back but I've involved my step daughters who have taken to it with much gusto!  My SDs are 8 and 6 and they each pick a book and we learn the signs together and then we sign them to my DS.  We have also learned the signs for bath time and when we are giving him a bath, his sisters are busy signing "splash" and "water" and "ducky"

I wanted to share because it's been such a rewarding experience thus far.  My SDs feel involved and also a connection with their little brother because he's too little to play, but this is a great way for them to interact with him.  Although DS is too small to sign back yet, he seems to LOVE watching the signs, especially when his sisters are making them.  Not only all of that, but it's been a wonderful way for me to bond with my SDs as we explore new signs and ways to teach them to DS.

  • My DD is getting ready to turn one, but like your son, she loves her (half) sister more than anyone in the world.  We also have had a lot of fun bonding over the sign language!

I was just telling DH at dinner that the relationship between SS and DD has surpassed all my wildest expectations. As an only child I am fascinated by the love that they have for each other.

  • Ditto everyone else. DD adores her (half)siblings. SS can make her laugh like no one else, and SD dotes on her endlessly.

She really misses them when they are at BM's house. Even when she was tiny I could tell a distinct difference in her behavior when they were gone. Last week, she was holding a picture of them and talking to it and kissing it. So cute!

  • That's precious! Kudos for you for trying so hard to include them!

  • I love how you included the kiddos in helping with the baby!!  Such a sweet story.

I'm not worried about how K will handle the baby, she's already over the moon excited.  I'm more worried about BM's influence over K.  She's incredibly bitter and angry about the baby, and we're worried she'll sour K to the whole experience.

I feel badly for you and K and I really hope BM changes her tune before your new LO arrives!

Our relationship with BM is the best it has ever been since the arrival of DS. I think that because SDs were so over the moon about their little brother that it rubbed off on their mom.  I hope something similar happens with your BM!
