BF mommas- how long between feedings at night?

are you still waking baby up in middle of night to BF or waiting until baby wakes up on own?? i am BF and supplementing with formula since I'm not making enough milk for her- she now will typically sleep 4-6.5 hrs straight the first stretch of the night and  once she got back to her birth wt around 3 weeks i stopped waking her up to eat.  i have been pumping about an hr or two after she goes to sleep (if i can stay up that long or wake back up- all depends on what time she goes to bed and how tired i am!) so  i dont feel like im going to explode when she wakes up and so what little milk i'm making doesnt decrease.  just wondering what everyone else does at night?? and second question- about how many oz is your baby eatingper 24 hr period now?? DD is 6 wks old and is eating an amazing 22-28 pz a day- she seems to always be "starving".  i of course do not want her to be hungry but also dont want to be overfeeding her.   she does seem to be good about stopping eating if she gets full even if bottle isnt gone- when i stop to burp i try to wait a little bit so her brain can register if shes full or not.  TIA for your response!  oh the many questions and things you worry about when you are a FTM :)

  • That sounds like my baby...he goes to bed around 8 and wakes up around 1 then 330 and 6 ...so a good 5 hr strech then every 2.5 hrs...I love the 5 hr stretch but leading up to it is a bit of a pain since he cluster feeds from 4 to 8, like never leaves my boob ha...I gave him his first bottle of pumped milk on Saturday and he ate 3oz and was still hungry so ate another half ounce..so I'd imagine he is eating about 3oz on a regular basis.

  • Oh and I don't wake him up at all to eat...I do not want to distrub the beast ha..my pedi said let him sleep through the night but don't let him go past 4 hrs without eating in the day and he never goes past 3 without waking up

  • Most nights my ebf baby sleeps from 9ish to 2ish then is up at 4 and 6 and then cluster feeds in the morning for a few hours between playing. I only woke to feed in the hospital but lo was back to birth at five days old.

  • We have good nights and bad. We had a great night two nights ago. DD was up every four hours. Last night was not so good. DD was up every 2 hours. She eats every 2 hours during the day as well at the most.

  • I stopped waking DS just before he was two weeks old. Reason being is that he is a sleeper, and was really hard to wake up in the middle of the night even with doing things like stripping him down to his diaper ect. So I decided after nights of frustration that he was eating well enough during the day to let him sleep at night.

I am not sure how much he is eating through out the day as feed on demand and EBF. On average he eats between every 2-3 hours during the day and gets any where between 8-14 breastfeeding sessions in per day.

At night he will sleep anywhere between 2.5 hours to 4.5 hours per night between feedings. I really varies night to night. Last night it was 2.5 hours the night before it was 4.5 hours.

  • oh and i also never woke dd up to nurse at night. She was back to her birth weight in one day and I have an oversupply of milk!

  • DD nurses around 7:30 then I usually nurse her again in her sleep around 10. After that I usually get a 5 hour stretch then another 4 hour one. But last night I got a 6 hour stretch, yay!
  • It varies- longest stretch has been 5 hours and the shortest has been 2... she's usually averaging every 4 though.

  • My LO is 5 weeks old, and she always wants to eat between 8:15-8:45pm. Then she usually sleeps anywhere from 5-7 hours. So she then eats again between 2:30ish-3:30ish am. Then she usually wakes to eat again anywhere between 5:00-7:30am. I do not wake her. If I did she wouldn't be with it enough to eat a "full" meal. I can't really say how much she eats, as we feed on demand and EBF. FWIW, I think it sounds like you're doing a good job.
  • DS is EBF and sleeps about 2.5-3hr stretches regularly at night. He's still pretty new though.

  • LO sleeps anywhere from a 3 to 4 hr stretch when we put him down at night. Then he nurses for about 30 to 40 min and then is down for another 2 hrs. After that he nurses again and sometimes he will go back down for an hour to 2 hours then we are up for the day. Gave him his first bottle of pumped milk this weekend and he ate about 3 1/2 oz each feeding. So my guess that is approx. what he gets each time he nurses.

  • Owen nurses every 2 to 3 hours all day, last nursing around 9:30pm, then around 4:30am, then around 9am.  He's 6 weeks old.  I'm guessing he eats around 3 to 4 oz per feeding, but it could be more...he gains really well.  He was a pound up from birthweight at 9 days old so the pedi said we didn't have to wake him to nurse anymore.  Now he's over 12 pounds, from 7.5 pounds at birth.

  • I never woke up the baby to eat. My theory is that if they're that hungry, they'll wake up and cry for food. My 3 week old wakes every 3-4 hours at night.
