Sippy cup transition

Ok so I have finally after purchasing like 8 sippy cups found one that LO will drink out of, I'm thrilled. Up until now I just give him water in it to sip on in between or after meals. But how do I go about transitioning him to just the cup. AM I supposed to put his formula in the cippy cup and let him feed himselfe with it, I feel like he'd become distracted and not finish it or do I feed it to him in the sippy cup. Or do we just continue the bottle feeds or offer teh sipppy cup with meals. Confused by the sippy cup

Re: Sippy cup transition

  • We went right from the breast to the sippy cup (because DS would never take a bottle). I wanted to start to wean him to free myself up, so I intended on giving him a full feeding in the cup. Of course he wasn't into that so what ended up working with us was to put 2-3 oz. milk in the cup every 2 hours and let him work on it until we refilled it (and with our offering the cup to him often, he would usually finish those 2-3oz.). Our pedi said it was normal for him not to drink a full feeding from it since he was used to nursing and as long as he was getting enough it, it was okay if it was spread out over the day. Good luck!

  • I think you can do whatever you want.  Try different things and see what works.  My 10 mo. old will drink out of a straw cup.  He drinks juice or water out of it.  I still use a bottle for formula b/c he won't drink much at a time out of his cup.  I called the pediatrician b/c he was often refusing his bottle.  She said that he can be drinking less formula now b/c of baby food, but to make sure he gets enough liquids by offering his cup at each meal/snack.  I always try to give him his bottle first, but if he refuses, I give the sippy cup.  It seems to be working for us.
