Pre-School and Daycare

Morning or Afternoon preschool....

Thoughts on this? P-K starts at 8am or 12:30 I think. I'm just not sure I want the hassle of getting all of us dressed and out of the house by 7:50, 5 days per week. I'd like them to learn to sleep in a little bit but then I'm more likely to do out of the house activities if it is in the afternoon too. I'm just not sure. Any thoughts on this?

If she goes in the afternoon she will be gone while my littler one is napping. It might be nice to have some time to myself occasionally.

  • We loved afternoons for Harm b/c I'm not a morning person and my work schedule is so flexible.  We are now switching to mornings though b/c we will not have our nanny so it makes more sense to do morning pre-k and than day care.  Just figure out what jives best for you.  That is what we keep doing.

  • If they have naptime at her school, I would do mornings.  DD's preschool has an all day option, but I have her in school just mornings now because they spend much of the afternoon napping.  She doesn't nap at home, and even if she did nap, we're not spending another couple thousand dollars a year for her to nap when we don't need the child care.

I don't like that I have to get DD to school by eight, but I do like getting my errands and chores out of the way in the morning and chilling with the kids in the afternoons.  That's the schedule that works best for us, but it may be different for you, especially if your younger one is a toddler rather than a baby like mine who still does a morning and an afternoon nap.

  • I'm a morning person so for me, if I had to choose, I would go with morning.  The kids will need to be able to get up and get ready once they started kindergarten (if full day/morning) or at the least in 1st grade.  My kids are used to napping at 12:30/1 or at least having a rest time and even in both of their preschool/PreK classes, they rest after lunch from around 1-3 so I just can't see my kids getting much out of school at that time of day.  Both my kids are in full day programs since I work FT.  My sister was a SAHM and always had her kids in preschool programs that were morning as she felt they just did better and that left the afternoon open for them to do things as a family vs having the day broken up by being home in the morning and then getting to school mid day.

  • Depends on the situation.  DS would love an afternoon program...he hasn't napped in over a year.  It isn't an option for us, but it would work well.  Plus, my friends' kids are younger and do play dates in the am before lunch and nap and we miss a lot of them trying to time it right with school.

  • I would have chosen afternoon preschool if it had been an option where we live. Unfortunately, it was not, and getting DD there by 7:50 am was a royal PITA (we aren't morning people). I would definitely go with afternoon, since it would allow ou some "me" time.

With my oldest I had a choice, and mornings worked better for us at that time since I had two that napped in the afternoon. With my middle son he had mornings this year, and next year he was suppose to start afternoons (moving so not sure what it will be yet)... so no idea how afternoons will go... but I have really enjoyed having just 1 in the morning (this is when I run or workout before bfast and coffee ; ).

  • Hi! Lurker from school aged kids.

In most preschools or 1/2 day kindergarten programs, AM always fills up first, which I have never understood.  I loved PM k and pre-k when my kids were small.  When the older one was in 1/2 day, it gave me a break during naptime.  When my youngest was in pre-k, I worked p/t and really helped fill the babysitting gap.  Grandparents are much more willing to leave their own jobs and pick up a preschooler at 3 than to care for a preschooler in the morning, drop off at preschool, THEN go to their own work.

  • I would pick whichever schedule fits your child better. My oldest son took 3 hour naps up until he was 4.5 years old and would start to tire out after 12p. Had AM and PM VPK even been a possibility for us, the AM class would have been the only schedule that would have made sense for him. If you have a child that sleeps in until 8:30 or 9a and doesn't nap at all, then afternoon might be a better fit for her.

  • We have to do morning kindergarten because of my husband's work schedule. I'd rather her be in afternoon, but it's just not possible. She normally sleeps in (10am and still asleep now), so it's going to be difficult at first.

I say morning---to get her started into a regular school routine that she'll have from K-12.  You can always give your preschooler "quiet time" or a nap during your youngest's naps.
