Pacifier

My LO seemed to be in alot of pain after his circumcision which resulted in the first two days home meaning if he was awake he wanted to be breastfeeding. I am totally all for letting my baby eat when he is hungry and soothing him as well, but I was only getting very short breaks (like 30 min) between feedings. Needless to say I was pretty raw and starting to crack. When I went to his first check up his doctor told me to use a pacifier. Everything I have read has said to wait two weeks so they can be good breast feeders. At the appointment I was feeding him and the doctor said I can tell he is a VERY active baby and he is latching fine. He said it is important for the mom to heal and rest and that didn't seem to be happening. He said the books say that because they can't see how each baby is doing and he was confident Beck would not have any problems.

I popped that pacifier in as soon as we got home and haven't looked back! It has helped tremendously. Now, he can be held by someone else when he is awake. Alot of time he just needs it to calm him down for a second and then is content without it. He is still feeding very well. I think alot of his improvement is also that his wee wee is not hurting from his circumcision anymore (or not as bad). He has been sleeping much better at night as well.

Re: Pacifier

  • I ended up giving a paci in the hospital on day 3 because I was so sore from cluster/comfort sucking the day before and he wouldn't stop crying.  I put it in his mouth and silence!  Haha.  He just wanted to suck.  Some babies may have issues with using one and breastfeeding but my LO didn't.  No nipple confusion here and he nurses just fine.  I use one sometimes but he doesn't prefer it, he actually prefers my breasts...Haha.

  • Yep- my LO actually started latching BETTER after I gave a pacifier- he absolutely refused any attempts to get him to latch before, but after the pacifier, he started with no problems.
  • I planned to wait a month, but broke down with the pacifier yesterday. Poor little boy has acid reflux and has been very cranky. When nothing else soothes him, the pacifier really helps. No issues latching so far, although I know it's early.

  • They actually give him one when they do the circ. SweetEase seems to help with the pain. They did a paci in it and give it to them to suck.

We ended up with Suck/Nipple confusion, but got it sorted out. I've used a NUK one sparingly, and he goes back and forth like a champ.

  • I wanted BF to work so much that I did not want to give in to that or the bottle and DD needed supplementing due to weight loss. I used the little tube and syringe for 2 1/2 weeks along with no pacifier. Finally I gave in to the bottle and to the NUK and she actually latched better and is now BF like a champ. My supply is not enough so we are BF/FF but thats ok....

This for us too.. We did change her paci to a tommee tippee one that's got a different shape, so it's more like sucking on a boob, if anyone does get worried about nipple confusion, it's supposed to help.

I think most babies do ok with a paci as long as they were taught the boob latch first, and as long as you keep BFing simultaneously..?

  • My LO had bottles while establishing BFing and there was no confusion either.  I figure it is the best of both worlds, giving us options.  I am super jealous however about the paci.  DD acts like it is the most disgusting thing on the face of the planet.  I keep trying though!
  • Since I had a CS, baby girl didn't get to eat until 2 hours after she was born. The nurse asked DH about a pacifier and remembered what I had said about waiting so she didn't get one then. But we had to use the SweetEase when I started feeding and we gave her the paci day 2 in the hospital. We also give her bottles of expressed milk while we're away or she's at the IL's while we're working. She's a very versatile baby with no nipple confusion.

  • I had to wait 4 hours after my c/s to hold DD, and by that time they had already gone against my wishes and given her a paci.  She's never wanted to latch and I attribute part of the problem to that first separation and getting a pacifier long before the boob was ever introduced.  Nothing to be done about it now... I EP and she takes any bottle and any paci.  In fact, it seems like she'll latch to anything BUT my boob, including DH's nose.  Stick out tongue

  • I am still working to get my little guy to take one. He likes boobies too much! I really wanted him to have one during his circ that was so awful. :( I could hear him crying down the hall and he seemed like he was in so much pain :( so sad.
