1st Trimester

when to see your ob-gyn

Is there any benefit to being seen by your doc the second you find out your preggos or to wait until around the 7th week?

My doc told me I didn't need to be seen until week 7 but my friend has already been seen and she just got her BFP. I don't want to miss out on anything by not being seen early. This is my first and I'm jumping out of my skin waiting see my doctor.  Thanks

Re: when to see your ob-gyn

  • I wasn't seen until almost 7 weeks (doc won't see before 6 weeks), and I went in and learned that I ovulated late so I was really only about 5w2d and there wasn't much to see - it was a blip on the screen. Quite honestly, you're probably going to worry/be anxious whether you are seen at 5 weeks or 7 weeks and all the time in between appointments :)

  • Unless there is a history of miscarrage, ectopic pregnacy or other high risk factors my OB doesn't see patients until 10 weeks.

  • For a normal pregnancy, my OB doesn't see patients until 8 weeks, and at that time he does an ultrasound to confirm and date the pregnancy and goes over a few things, and gives you the time to ask any questions you may have.

Prior to that, there is really hardly any point to doing an u/s unless it is around 7 weeks.

Many doctors don't do beta testing if there is no history of loss or anything along those lines.

  • I'd wait. I saw my OB for the first time at 8w0d and even then I wish I'd waited another week or two. LO looked like a blob but had I waited a little longer we would've been able to see a lot more forming.
  • Thanks! I had to have a myomectomy in order to conceive, so I  guess he is seeing me a little early just to make sure everything is ok, but 7 weeks doesn't feel that early. Hopefully, I can see a heartbeat at least

  • I met with my OB right after my DH and I started trying. She told me that when I get my BFP to call and they'd get me in right away.  I did what she said and found out "get me in right away" actually meant 9wks.  I'm only 6wks now, so I have what seems like forever to wait. When the OB office scheduled my appointment the nurse told me it was customary to bring patients in for their first visit around that time. She also went ahead and scheduled my next appointment which is 2.5 weeks later (around 11 - 12 weeks).  The waiting is killing me!  Like a lot of first time mothers-to-be, I am hyper alert to every ache or pain and Google everything.  I hope you are finding it easier than I am to be patient

My 1st appt is tomorrow at 10 weeks, besides going in for my blood test at 5.5 weeks. It is hard waiting, but they aren't able to see anything before about 7 weeks so there isn't any point in getting patients in before that. Just have faith that your baby is growing just fine.

  • There's really no point in going early.  I have my first appointment on Thursday, and I am certain I will be told to come back in a few weeks for an u/s (I have to get one early, due to loss)
