So my hubby and I have been saving up for two years to go a resort on Turks and Caicos. We decided it would be a great place to try to get knocked up, or, on the off chance we had succeeded, a fab babymoon.
However, now that I am apparently fertile myrtle, and got knocked up first try with twins, I'm so uncertain! I would still love to go, and medically all looks well with both babies. My cervix is closed and both twins are measuring ahead of date. My midwife seemed okay with travel, though she urged us to go as soon as possible. As for me, I'm finally feeling a little more energetic. We would leave on the trip when I am 18 weeks, 3 days and come home at 19 weeks 1 day. The trip would take about seven hours, five on a plane.
However, I know I would also be away from my doctors, and that things can change very quickly in a multiple pregnancy. I don't want to risk harming either of my babes. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Any travel experiences, good or bad?
Also - sorry if this question has been asked recently. I tried to search but I find the search interface on The Bump to be kind of useless.
Re: Travel at 18 weeks?
I had to go to Dallas (from Chicago) for work at about 20ish weeks, and we also had my baby shower in Detroit when I was almost 22 weeks (a 4 hour drive), and both were fine.
I flew to Dallas, so I made sure to get an aisle seat, bought a big bottle of water for the plane, and walked up and down the aisle a few times during the flight.
We had planned on traveling again around 26 weeks (9 hour drive), but didn't because I started having PTL issues.
I think around 18 weeks, if you feel fine and your doctors are okay with it, I would go. However, I would try to stay in the shade, drink lots of water, and relax as much as possible.
I took my last trip during week 23. I got tired mainly because I caught a bad cold the day we left, and it was a trip to see the in laws, which while fun, we had to constantly explain that I couldn't handle long car trips for sightseeing (they live in CA).
A relaxing beach vacation would have been a lot of fun! I flew to Oregon and was in a wedding during week 17, I got tired but that's because it was one of those weddings where the wedding party did a lot of "work" to help (which I was happy to do but I definitely tired easier).
Going on a fun, relaxing beachy vacation where you have no responsibilities, I really think you will be fine as long as you are feeling well and your MD says you are okay to go. I think it would be a great thing before you have your babies to have a great vacation with your DH! Are you just seeing a midwife? How about an MFM/Perinatologist?

First of all I want to say how much I LOVE turks and caicos! My husband and I had our destination wedding there 3 years ago! It is an amazing place- perfect for relaxing on the beach. It's very low key- but extremely hot. It was well into the high 90's- low 100's on our wedding day in late June. The heat would be my only concern. Definitely drink a ton of water!
I did a disney world trip with my husbands family weeks 16-17 and felt great. I just l limited my physical activities and spent most of my time reading poolside.
I just went to Italy for 2 weeks. When we left I was 17w6d and returned at 19w6d. The flight was 9 hours Rome to Philly (plus another hour flight home). The flight over was fine, I was also really excited. The flight back was rough, I had a hard time getting comfortable. That being said, I always hate the return transatlantic flgihts, so that was part of it I am sure.
We had a great time on the trip, I had the most energy I had for awhile. That being said, we did a few things out that we originally planned to do. But, my trip was sightseeing with a good deal of walking. At the beach you should be completely fine!
I tried to drink lots of water and just listened to my body. If I was tired I sat down, if I needed a nap I took one. I made sure to have snacks with me at all times because sometimes getting food took longer than I thought. Especially had snacks for the plane and the trains we took.
I think you should definately go. Plus, the way I looked at it, that was probably be the last trip we will take for awhile!!
I'm heading to London and Paris from 22-23 weeks for a wedding. We'll be double checking with my OB 10 days prior to make sure things are locked up nice and tight in there.
Is it ideal? No. Will it be the same trip I'd take if I wasn't pregnant? No. Would I much rather be going to lie on a beach all day...HELL YEAH!
I think you'll have fun.
I'm going up to Canada to see my family for about 6 weeks from 12w - 18 w. My OB said it was fine, as long as I take the precaution of walking around on the flight and that I see her before I go and after I get back. She does not want me travelling after 28 weeks.
