anyone have an amnio?

I need to have one, and I'm just curious what to expect.

  • I had a CVS, it is similar, just done earlier.  I had a vaginal, but others have had it with a needle.  You might post on Parenting if you don't get anything on here.  Just be sure that the doctor you are going to does a lot of these.  The man that did mine works at the #1 busiest hospital in the United States for baby delivery and he works at the largest perinatology practice in the state.  He had done 4 CVS/Amnio's that morning and it was only about 11am.  You do not want to get one from a doctor who only does it a couple of times a month.
  • I had amnio.

I had it done at 16 weeks and given how much everyone hypes it up, I was pleasantly surprised!

Below is a blip about my experience

The doctor found two "nice pockets" of fluid to obtain the sample.
I was iodined up, injected with a mild anesthetic, checked again for the fluid pocket of preference and bingo, the needle went in.
The needle wasn't as big as I thought it would be. I had envisioned a 6 inch needle that was SUPER thick...in reality, DH guessed the needle was about 3.5" to 4" and it wasn't as thick as I thought it would be.
I couldn't look as the procedure was done.
But you wanna know what it felt like? I have nothing to compare it to, so I will try my best.
The anesthetic was just as uncomfortable as the amnio needle. There was a bit of a burn as the anesthesia went into the skin. It quickly dissipated. Sort of like at the dentist the initial prick and the burn really suck! I knew the baby was low, but I didn't realize HOW low. both needles went in just above my pubic bone!
The amnio needle...I felt some pressure as it went in but not much else until it got to my uterus. That scared the shit out of me. That was NOT numb, so I felt it go in. It was like a sudden cramp, and I remember sucking air in out of fear...but that too quickly dissipated.

At that point, I looked down to watch the doctor fill the tube (syringe?) with the amniotic fluid. The fluid is not clear...it looks like a pale yellow, but no blood or particles. When that was done, the needle came out. No pain, no weird feelings nothing.
The nurse cleaned off the iodine (I don't recommend wearing white pants to this appointment) and put a band-aid over the needle site and I was done!
I was truly surprised at how eventful this procedure was.

I had no restricts after so DH, Mom and I went to lunch. I had some very MILD cramping, but not enough to keep me down.

Mom planned on spending the night to "take care" of me, but it ended up more of a slumber party.
DH was AWESOME! Not only was he a trooper and watched the whole procedure, but later that night, he cooked dinner AND cleaned up!
It was a pleasant appointment and a great visit with Mom and I am so lucky to have such an awesome husband!

I had a slight bruise at the entrance site for about a week, but nothing more than that.
Would I do it again? Yes, the doctor was very gentle, the staff was great and the procedure was much less complicated than I thought it would be.

    GL!
