I guess it depends who it is. My coworker is always negative and I always tell her she's being negative, but telling her doesn't make her any less negative at all. I told my other co worker that she's very cynical and she laughed it off. I'd just ignore them if you're not relatively close.
Most of the time it's this but mainly because of who that person is and I don't feel like arguing with them or starting family drama. I've gotten a little snappy back a few times and said something but even then she didn't get the hint.

Sometimes I try to find out more about them, because the negativity stems from stress they don't think you could understand or they are unaware they are projecting onto you.
It's really tough to say and it depends on who it is/what my relationship to them is.
If it was a good friend who suddenly became really negative, I'd likely call them out on it.
Someone who I'm kind of stuck with (like family I couldn't just write off) that is just a negative person and always has been-I'd just nod, smile, and be glad I'm not as miserable as they are.
