nipple stimulation?

Have any of you tried it, and does it work?  For some reason, I am reluctant.  Actually, I know the reason.  I am afraid I will start "leaking" and that that would freak me out.  But my sister swears by it- she said it will trigger contractions and if you are far enough along and already progressing a little (I am 1cm dilated and 50% effaced, baby engaged) that these contractions can turn into the real deal.

Anyone try it?

I'm not going to lie, I tried it for about three days before I gave birth. It would give me some minor contractions, but nothing serious. I suppose it is possible that it helped me dilate and efface a bit more though. I was already 5cms and 80% effaced when I tried it.

  • It's generally not recommended to try this method until much closer to, or past, your EDD. Some people think it's only a good idea to do once you're in early labor, only to help things along.  If it does work, it can cause some really intense contractions that can be hard to stop. I don't have any personal experience with it, and I know it has worked well for some people (and not at all for others), but I'd probably run it by your Dr or MW first. There seem to be a lot of other things to try before people recommend this route.

  • One of my pregnancy books (I think it was What to Expect) said that it takes 2 hours of stimulation a day... Not sure if this is the case for those of you that have tried it and it worked, but I don't know if my nipples could handle it! Then again, I'm about to the point where I'm willing to try anything to get this baby out..

  • I tried and nothing happened. I was further along than you (39w and 3cm 75%).

Now I am overdue and figure nature will take its course.

  • In terms of sex and nipple stim, yeah it always causes contrx for me.

I tried it with a pump while in early prodromal labor and it causes a lot of intense contrax but when I stopped pumping it went away in a few minutes.

FWIW I have BF two babies and only got a few drops of colostrum while pumping for an hour on and off. And I have an oversupply while nursing, so I wouldnt expect a ton of leaking.

  • It worked for us! I tried it and went into labor a few hours later. The hard thing is that my labor went very fast and contractions were pretty intense.  I ended being a natural delivery without planning to be without pain meds. My nurse was very flustered and my Dr. barely made it in time.He got there and I pushed within a couple minutes. I went from 5cm when I came into the hospital to delivering within an hour. I only labored at home for an hour while I waited for my husband and to pack the last things...while getting my kid's Auntie to the house. I had epidurals and pain meds the first 2 times so I wasn't prepared for this quick delivery and the pain but we made it through. I was in shock for several hours after my son's birth because it happened so fast. I'm thinking what they say about it causing more intense contractions MUST be true. In my case it was anyways. I hope this helps.Everyone is affected in a different way by it I am sure.
