What are your childcare arrangements? DS1 starts Kindergarten this fall. I really don't want to do before and aftercare - I know I didn't like being in school any longer than I had to and I work 8 hours so he'd be at school 9 or 10 hours a day! That is a LONG day! Daycare I can justify as it's naps, play, and a little learning.
So I'm thinking DD and DS2 will go to daycare. I may send DS to before care and then look for a sitter to pick him up from school and watch him at home.
What do all of you do and how many hours are your kids at school?
Re: Moms with kids in daycare and in school . ..
ODD went to after school care and loved it. She liked being able to stay with her new friends. Next year both girls will go, and DS will be in the daycare. Eventually we might try to find an at home provider in the district so they can bus to her house after school, but right now, the after school care works really well for us.
You had said you can justify daycare as naps, play, and a little learning. Well after school care won't change that much. Kindergarten is more learning, after school care is mainly play, so in the end I think it evens out.
DH and I married 8 years. Mom of three, stepmom of one.
My ILs get DS off the bus and watch him at home. If they couldn't do it, I've always thought I would get a sitter to be there in the afternoon, too. But, honestly, DS begs to go to after care. The kids that I know that go have a great time. Fortunately, for us, school gets out at 4 pm so it's pretty easy to pick up your kids w/in an hour after school gets out if you can do a flex schedule.
Can your KGer get dropped off at your LO's daycare in the PM? It would be nice to have one pick up for you too.
We had an au pair. DS1 is in 1st grade, DS2 and DD1 do to part time preschool in the mornings, and DD2 and DS3 stay home. This arrangement works well for us because we leave early in the morning for work (I leave at 7am) and most of the kids aren't even awake yet. DS1 doesn't get on the school bus until 8:30 and the preschoolers don't get dropped off until 9am. I don't have to worry about before/after care, school 1/2 days, holidays, snow days or when the kids are sick and can't go to school, my au pair is always there to cover.
I say "had" because DH was unemployed for 9 months and my mom took place of our au pair a few months ago, but we will be going back to the au pair as soon as we have the funds to do so.
