Painting??

I am 27 weeks pregnant, and my husband and I were wanting to paint the living room and hallway. Several people have told  me that I was not allowed to paint because of the fumes, so I called the dr's office. The prenatal nurse said that some dr's say it's OK, and others say no way. If you painted, what type of paint did you use?

  • *I'm a dirty hippy, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Low or No VOC paint would be your best bet.  Any home improvement store now sells them.  They're a little more expensive, but they don't off gas dangerous chemcials for you or the baby (I would use them even if I weren't pregnant), and the manufacturing process is much better for the environment.

If you do use traditional paint, open a few windows, and put bowls of vinegar out.  The vinegar disapates the odor in the room quicker than just having windows open.

  • same here - we're only using the no VOC paint. They sell one at home depot called FreshAire choice, but if you google Low VOC paint or No VOC paint you will find some others.

  • I painted our new office and the nursery last week.  I used low voc paint from Sherwin Williams.  My husband is a terrible painter so it was either me or hire someone to do it.  No problems to report!

  • we are painyning today w/home depot's low voc-I think I would buy it again even if not pregnant-so nice not having the fumes. It looks the same as traditional paint.
  • Olympic paint at Lowes is also low VOC

  • I just moved into a new home - that the previous owners painted horridly and I am hosting Christmas dinner, so I have been painting like mad.  I have tried to avoid the primer (to cover up the orange, neon pink, and navy striped rooms) but I have been doing most of the regular painting.  I bought the freshaire paint - not just for me but b/c paints continue to emit the fumes for a long time after you paint and since I'm painting an entire house, I'd rather not expose baby to that much.  The freshaire paint is really nice anyway, even if it is more $ for the no-VOC - it covers well.
