does this sound like herpes??? I never had it before

Also on 3rd Trimester

For the past week my lips have been sensitive to hot and spicy food as well acidic foods. Now I have a small rash along my lips. They aren't sores and they don't look like typical herpes. They are tiny little red bumps. I'm in a total panic because I'm thinking the worst, herpes. I've never had herpes in my life. Could it just be an allergic reaction to something or my insane hormones because I'm 37 weeks pregnant? I had swollen glands and I got tested for mono and my numbers are a bit high so maybe it's just my body acting weird. How would I have gotten herpes? I haven't been kissing anyone or sharing anything. My husband has zero signs or symptoms. I requested a herpes test and I'm just waiting for the results, panicking. Any advice???

  • I had a random allergic reaction to something I ate once and my lips got red and really bumpy.  The bumps were really tiny and almost looked like they had liquid in them.  Totally gross but they went away in just a few hours.

  • Unfortunately I've had these for a few days. When I saw the doctor she said it did not look like herpes but she still ran a blood test to me. I'm so paranoid and I think being this pregnant is making it much worse.
  • It sounds like an allergic reaction to me. If you've been eatting the same foods that you ate when you got the bumps, it stands to reason that they would still be present.

  • I don't think I've eaten anything different but who knows with pregnancy, especially late term pregnancy. My chemistry is changing and I'm maybe more sensitive.
  • Are they actually on your lip/ lip line?  If they're on your skin around your lips, it could be perioral dermatitis.  I have had that on and off throughout this pregnancy.  It's difficult to diagnose because it can look like lots of other things (including herpes, which is what they tried to say I had before the tests came back negative) and the blisters are often brought on by hormonal changes.

They are around my lip line but partially on my lips. They are around the edges on the top and a bit on the bottom. My doctor says it doesn't look like herpes to her but I'm of course thinking the worse and when I try to research online it keeps bringing me to herpes. What did perioral dermatitis feel like? How did you heal it? Mine stings when I eat hot stuff and just feels like dry, chapped lips the rest of the time.

  • It looks and feels different for everyone so look up some google images and see if it looks like what you have.  I had to go to a dermatologist and get an Rx cream called Finacea (pregnancy category B) and that was a wonder drug for me.  Normally they'd put a person with PD on antibiotics but they are not approved for use during pregnancy.  I also had a lot of success with the Tea Tree line from The Body Shop.

There are natural methods you can try first, including Apple Cider Vinegar as a toner or tea tree oil as a spot treatment (although yes, those both sting.)  earthclinic.com has a lot of information and reviews on natural remedies for all kinds of ailments.

I would honestly recommend that you see a dermatologist asap to get to the bottom of it.  If you don't already have a derm, sometimes you can get in faster at a new derm if you agree to see a physician's assistant at the office.

Thanks, I'm trying to get to the bottom of it. I'm waiting on my herpes test and I'll call my dermatologist on monday. Thanks again.

  • Sounds like an allergic reaction to me

  • I never did figure out what it was, but I had something similar. The air had been really dry and I got cracks on the corners of my mouth, well after eating something spicy, I noticed little red bumps form there as well. They almost looked like pimples. They were painful, and made opening my mouth wide hurt like hell. Anything spicy made it worse. It'd get really dry. I just kept moisturizer on the corners and it gradually went away. And I know I don't have herpes :)

  • I honestly thing its a type of allergic reaction to pregnancy.  I have ONLY had this when I was pregnant.  It is super itchy or really painful.. it disappears once you deliver.  I asked my Ob about it and she had no idea what I was talking about.  Like I said.. it went away the first time, and its actually the way I realized I was pregnant this time.  Its so strange.  For the last pregnancy it started at the end.. for this pregnancy it was the beginning and now intermittent through-out the pregnancy.  Its either a reaction to food while pregnant or hormones.

It does feel more like an allergic reaction. When this happened to you, was the inside of your mouth more sensitive to spicy or acidic foods?

  • When I was younger I had something called viral spamada (something that sounds kinda like that) and my mouth was full of sores. Wasn't herpes though. It's probably a cold sore if anything get some abreva totally safe.
