Migraine reliefe?

Anyone have any advice on getting rid of migraines? I have suffered with them most of my teenage years & I'm not sure what I can take right now. Any advice??

Re: Migraine reliefe?

  • I started getting ocular migraines when I started BCPs in 2008. They are awful :( I actually lose my vision first...and as it slowly comes back the pain of the migraine sets in. I went for a year with no migraines, and now that I'm pregnant I've had three.

My OB told me the only thing he wants me to take is Extra Strength Tylenol (which really doesn't even touch a migraine for me). So, I take two of those and cover my eyes with a cold wash cloth.

Fortunately, mine only last 3 or 4 hours and not all day like some people.

Sorry I don't have better advice!

  • I had one a few weeks back and it was a weekend.  I called 2 friends, one a pharmacist and one an ob/gyn.  They both told me it was okay to take excedrine migraine b/c it is tylenol and caffeine.  If extra strength tylenol isn't working though I guess excedrine won't either.  Try a dark room and a cold compress.

Excedrin migraine also has aspirin in it. I wouldn't take it past second tri. It can cause low fluid and affect the baby's circulation at that point.

My neurologist and I have a system from when I was pregnant with DS. Hydroxyzine (safe in second and third tri) and Tylenol. Then phenergan. Then caffeine. Then stadol. If I have to use my stadol nasal spray, I come home from work. Some of you ladies recommend ice packs. Have not tried that. I also take 400mg of vitamin b2 and 400mg mag ox every day as a preventative. Turns my pee bright yellow and keeps me from getting too constipated too.

  • I've suffered from migraines since I was a teenager. I took a trip to the ER at 7 weeks with one and the best advice I have is benadryl and a soda with caffeine in it. Seriously works wonders, if it isn't enough you can also take Tylenol with it as well. Its what they gave me in the ER and has seriously been a lifesaver! HTH!

  • Definitely let your doctor know because, like another poster said, there are Rxs you can take.  I was given Fioricet for mine and it really helped.  Feel better!

Oh and to the poster talking about Excedrin, I agree with the poster who said you can NOT take Excedrin Migraine.  It definitely has aspirin in it.

  • Scalp massage and head on.
  • My OB prescribed fioricet when I was pg with DS.  This time, I've been able to keep them under control with tylenol, caffeine, and alternating heat & ice.

  • Thank yall so much for the advice. I have finally gotten it to subside some but it is lingering. I took some Tylonal & took a nap & it helped some. If it continues to hang around I will be trying something else! Blah! Tongue Tied
  • I got these with DD and am having them again this time around. My OB recommended Tylenol, but it doesn't help at all for me. I run hot water over my feet while sitting on the edge of the bath. I read about it when I was pregnant with DD and it helps sometimes. Helps to have a cold compress on my head, too. I always have to lie down to finally set over it, and sometimes I sill wake up feeling rough.

This. I have blessedly not needed any serious meds since getting pregnant (I've been watching my triggers carefully and taking tylenol as soon as I think I'm headed towards a headache.) I take the exact same preventives (even down to the doses!) and have been surprisingly thrilled with them. As others have recommended, talk to your doctor to see about your options. Good luck!

I am a BIG fan of the Migraine Well Patches, you can find them at Walgreens, or at drugstore.com.  I personally buy them on Amazon because you can get 2 packs for the price of one.

They're 4 inch by 1 inch patches that you can put on your forehead (similar to the thermacare heat patches) but they're cooling instead, and have a lavender/eucalyptus scent. The cooling effect lasts about 8 hours.  They are my miracle cure when I can't take my regular migraine medicine.

If you're around the house and don't mind looking silly with a patch on your forehead, these are amazing.

  • Talk to your doctor.  My doctor prescribed me Fiuricet (sp?).  For the most part, it works, but they did tell me if I took it and it didn't work, to go to the ER.  I know Tylenol is safe, but definitely no Ibuprofen or Aspirin.  Good luck, momma!
