Rude woman at the library today

This morning I took both boys to the library. I had DS#2 in the Moby wrap (which I have used for both boys). This older woman comes up to me and says, "I don't mean to be nosy, but..." (and already I'm mentally rolling my eyes) She proceeds to tell me (extremely condescendingly) about a "friend of a friend" who used a wrap and her baby suffocated. And yes, that's awful and sad, but what exactly did she hope to accomplish by telling me this horror story? I very politely told her that I always make sure my baby's face is not covered by the material and that I love the Moby wrap. But sheesh, it just seemed like an inappropriate thing for her to say to a complete stranger.

  • Ugh, I can't stand it when people start sentences with "I don't mean to (be nosy, rude, offend, etc) but..." clearly if you have to explain that before what you are about to say, just keep your mouth shut. Especially to a complete stranger.
My MIL pulled that when she asked me about BF. "Well I don't mean to dissuade you, but it doesn't work for everybody, just so you know." Um yeah, thanks...why don't I try first and go from there since your experience may not be my own.

  • There are always those people. You find out your pregnant "My friend miscarried at 6w and didn't know!" You find out you're having a boy. "My friend thought she was having a boy too." They are just the most annoying people ever.

  • i hate that people need to share horror stories rather than just saying nice things

  • To be fair, some of the sling carriers really are dangerous for babies ( not the moby).  I'm sure she just didn't know the difference and was trying to be helpful.  If you saw someone doing something you thought was dangerous to a newborn, wouldn't you say something?

I guess it had a lot to do with the WAY she said it. Her tone seemed to imply that clearly I must be a horrible, uneducated mother for putting my baby in the Moby!

  • There is a "right" way and a "wrong" way to wrap a baby.

Obviously you are not the village idiot and can wrap your baby so they dont' suffocate.

  • When I was pregnant with my first, H's grandmother called to see if the baby had arrived yet... then she proceeded to tell me about her stillborn child born around the same gestation as I was at the time. I was in tears I was so horrified.

    I'll love you forever,
    I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living my baby you'll be.

  • I have a wrap that's similar to a maya wrap, and I'm worried about her suffocating or having her head to far bent over with her chin on her chest. What's the wrong/right way?
