Thank You note etiquette question

Please give me your opinion on this...

 I've sent thank you notes for every shower gift I received, and for every gift I received in the mail ,both before and after LO was born.

If someone comes over my house to visit the baby and gives me a gift in person, and I open it in front of them and verbally thank them, is the verbal acknowledgement of the gift enough, or do I still send a note?
