2nd Trimester

concerned about baby's movements

i'm 22 weeks now and i noticed that my baby only kicks when i'm sitting up, late at night, and extremely quiet. is that normal? i never feel her during the day, but i thought they were supposed to kick like 10 times every 2 hours or something like that? mine are very sporadic, one night she kicked nonstop for a while and the other night she only kicked once or twice. is this normal, should i be worried?

Re: concerned about baby's movements

  • My doc said I didn't need to be concerned about kick counts until 28 / 29 weeks.  If you're worried try drinking some juice and laying down for an hour and see if he/she moves.

  • I think I read online that when you are moving around it rocks the baby some what making them sleep more.  It also said that most babies sleep for 10-12 hours a day at this point so maybe that is when she sleeps.  My little guy is more active at night when I am trying to sleep, during the day I get a few kicks but he saves it for when I am trying to relax...lol.
  • I feel mine LO mostly at night. She has started to poke around during the day more but still night seems to be her time to shine!

  • Start your daily kick counts are 28 weeks, you should feel your baby move 10 times in a 2 hour period. Pick a time of day that you know is an active time for your baby. If it moves less than 10 times in that 2 hour period, drink something cold or sweet and repeat the test. If it doesn't move at all in that 2 hour period call your doctor. Know your baby! Jabs, swishes, rolls, any movement counts. Also, at 22 weeks you may not feel movement all of the time, that is normal. If your placenta is anterior it takes longer to feel movement and they don't SEEM to move as much. Always listen to your gut and if you are at all concerned call your doctor. If it is the middle of the night or late at night, that is OK, there is always a doctor on call.

Well I haven't had any movement yet and will be 22 wks in 3 days.  Don't worry about it.  I know my placenta is anterior so it cushions the kicks which is why I am not feeling them yet.

I also understand in the beginning movement can be sporadic and occasional which is completely normal

  • I'm really glad that you posted this and for all of the feedback.  My baby seemed to be really active when I first started feeling him a couple of weeks ago (around 20w), but the last few days has been less active.  I've also been a little more emotional/cranky recently and less happy then I was just a couple weeks ago.  I wonder if that has anything to do with it??
