I need recommendations for an infant car seat

My FIL is so generously going to buy us any car seat of our choice and cost does not matter. He said just make sure it is extremely safe and comfortable for baby. What would you recommend? I have already checked out the graco snugride and wasn't that impressed but then again I am a FTM and maybe I am not critiquing it on the right stuff. The only baby store we have here is BRU and they have a limited selection so I am pretty sure we are going to end up picking out one online. I did like the Safety 1st onBoard35 Air Infant Car Seat - O2

I just need some serious direction. If it matters we are also getting the City Mini GT. Thanks!

We got a Chicco brand (we got the whole travel system Keyfit20 I think)

  • The Baby Bargains recommends the Snugride 35.  Why didn't you like it?  I love mine.  It's compatible with almost everything a carseat snaps into.  Plus (and one of the most important things you'll find) it has a nice big canopy.  My friend's LO always had sun in her eyes in the Chicco.  Also, it washes very nicely.  The tether strap is easy to work with too.

  • If carrying the baby in the car seat is not a big deal for you I highly recommend the radian rxt. It fits babies 5lbs -45 lbs rear facing and fits up to 120lbs forward facing or as a booster seat. It is one of the best if not the best car seat on the market right now in terms of safety, comfort, ease of install. I purchased one for my son when he outgrew his infant seat and I am strongly debating with myself on getting another for baby #2. If you are a baby wearer or something else then a carseat carrier is not a big deal.

  • I will only ever buy a graco or a britax. They are best in safety.

  • I have heard that the key fit chico brand is the best and even the hospitals say it's the best (but I think that info came from a saleswoman, so you never know, lol).

  • I also had a Graco Snugride 35 when DD was an infant.  I liked it!

  • We haven't purchased yet, but we're planning on buying the Graco snug ride 35. I've done lots of research, and I think it's best for us terms of safety, convenience, style and price.

  • I had a graco safe seat for my first two, it is expired now and they don't make it anymore.  I have a graco snugride 30 for our new little guy. I really like the graco seats. Very safe, comfy, compatible with just about everything and the canopy is huge and wonderful.

We used a Graco 22 with DS and loved it.  This time we went with the Snugride 35 for the extended use...DS was too tall for the 22 around 9 months.  That being said, it really wasn't a big deal to transition to the convertible rear-facing.  I mean the point of an infant seat is to carry baby around.  Who wants to carry a 17lb baby around in a seat that weighs an extra 8 pounds.

The Chicco Keyfit 30 and the Britax also get good ratings in crash tests and get good reviews.  I suggest going to BRU again and trying out all three.  Get the one you think is easiest to carry, get in and out of the base, etc.

  • I really liked our Chicco Keyfit 30.  My son got to big for pretty early because he's huge and now we have the Britax Marathon 70 which we also really love.  :)

  • My sister used the Chicco KeyFit 30 & really liked it. Baby Bargains recommends the Graco Snug Ride 35, but I think the book is a couple of years old now (not sure). I am leaning toward the Safety First On Board 35. All 3 are deemed best buys by consumer reports. The Safety First gets the highest safety rating from consumer reports though.

  • I have been reading and checking all the baby stores in the area, and I think the best for both  safety and  money is the britax convertible rear and front facing, and you can use it from 5 to 20 lbs rear and 20 to 70 lbs front.  It has been one if not the best in safety, it comes with front and  side impact  protection, the only negative I see is that you cant use it to carry baby around like with the other travel systems but to me is worth it even if I need something else to carry him around because i rather safety over my own confort.... i hope it helps take care

  • Based on Consumer Reports ratings and reviews from other users, we seemed to find that Chicco Keyfit 30 ranked the highest with safety and ease of use. We have decided to get that one with an extra base for the other car. BRU does sell the Chicco Keyfit. Actually, car seats seem to be the only thing that I thought BRU had a decent selection of--as I did not like their stroller options and even felt limited by their cribs.
I am having trouble updating tickers--But I am due on April 2015. I have 2 older step children: 9 and 14 yrs and I also recently had 2 younger children: 2 years and 1 year... so this means I will be having 3 under 3--and trying to fit our family of 7 into our minivan--eek!

    Best:  graco snug ride

    Dark horse:  Britax chaperone

  • I bought a Graco SnugRider Infant Car Seat, 35lbs. I think it is great. Also I bought a Graco SnugRider Infant Car Seat Stroller Frame.
