We just moved into a new apartment in Little Rock because my DH is TDY (temporary duty) here for 6 months. I am so excited to be in a new city and I absolutely love it here.
EXCEPT- i can smell my neighbor SMOKING! I think some of the vents must be attached to his apartment also because on the side of the house that shares walls with his, I can smell HORRIBLE smoke! We have tried closing off vents, we still smell it. I have complained to the office, and they have not yet done anything.
Do you ladies have any suggestions? Do you know of anything I can put in the vents to reduce the odor?
I realize this guy (who also happens to be one of the complex's maintenance workers) has every right to smoke in his own home, but I also have every right not to be smelling smoke all the time. Not to mention we will have a baby here in a couple of months...
Re: Smoking frustration
I am in real estate sales and investment, and have dealt with smoky houses time and time again. And I am very sorry to inform you that there is nothing you will be able to do about the smoke smell once it is in the house. You can cover it up with "air fresheners" all you want, but it still will be there. (Without the option of drastic actions, ie: carpet replacement and Kilz paint.) I would make the office management come into your apt. to see what you are talking about. Perhaps there is something that they can think of to stop it from entering your apt. all together.
I agree with the above posters, free standing air filters will help, but do you know where the smoke is coming from? Maybe if you use a black light and turn off all of the lights. Then maybe you could at least figure out where it is entering. I know it sounds ridiculous! But seriously a hand held black light will work much of the time! (I use black lights for cleaning purposes when looking at new investment properties.) Then you could go from there.
I am so sorry! That really sucks! Especially when you are pregnant!
I had a similar situation. My neighbor was smoking himself to death (he would wake up at night hacking) I asked the landlord to replace the filter in my vent, but that didn't do much. I beleive it was coming in through the ceiling because of the way it was designed. The only thing that helped was an open window and to use a HEPA filter.
If that doesn't help after a few weeks I would ask the landlord if there is another unit you can move to. As a pg woman you have a very persuasive argument.
