Babywearing and sun protection

Hi all,

I just ordered a Beco Butterfly II (SO excited) and am wondering what you all do for sun protection for your LOs when in a carrier.  Since my LO is under 6 months, i prefer not to use sunscreen/block if at all possible.  Mainly, I am concerned about his little arms and leggies getting sun. Usually when I babywear, he is in a short sleeved onesie so as to not get too hot but then his arms and legs are exposed. What have you found that works?

Thanks!

Re: Babywearing and sun protection

  • I know you don't awant to use sunscreen but California Baby is pretty good for sensitive skin. Here is what their site says about 6 months and younger...

Age: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that if exposure to the sun is unavoidable and your baby is under 6 months, a non-chemical sunscreen (like ours) should be used; consult with your physician. The AAP recommends that because an infant's skin is very thin and sensitive, infants under 6 months should be kept out of the sun.

    HTH!!

  • On a normal day I will just plan to stay in the shade or facing away from the sun as much as possible. If I take my older one to the playground I'm usually able to find a spot to stand where my body shades her from the sun. I've also seen people where really wide brimmed straw hats and that can help make your shade bigger.

However, I also am not opposed to putting baby sunblock on if I know we're planning to play in the sun for a while (pool, picnic etc).

  • Last summer I used UV baby legs on DD's arms and legs and a sun hat.

  • I mostly avoided being outside with her between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., but if we did go out I would throw a white Aiden + Anais swaddling blanket over her.

We used the A&A blankets also before 6 months.

  • I have the A+A blankets.  So, if he was in a SSC like the Beco, would you just drape it over him or what?  I'm trying to figure out how to make it work. :)

    We did the same.

ETA: I had him wear a hat and then put the blanket on his head (then put the hat on his head) so the blanket would stay in place and cover his body and neck. It probably looked silly but it worked. I also tuck it into the carrier.

I do like the idea of UV baby legs though
