We've been doing BLW with my 11mo for about 4 months now. He does really well with it, but on occasion, he will leave a chunk of food in his mouth. A few times I didn't even see there was still food in his mouth and would find it 1/2 hr later still in there. He squirms if I try to put my finger in to grab the food, and I'm scared that will cause him to choke on it. But it's also not easy to get him to spit out the food.
Any suggestions on fixing this? I guess this isn't really a BLW issue as it could be the case with any table food. Thanks!
Re: Keeping food in mouth (BLW)
My two year old went through a phase of doing this. He was much older though, but there was one day when he held a piece of food in there for 2 hours or more. It was interesting with an older kids because it meant that he didn't talk for that whole time.
What we ended up doing was checking his mouth before letting him get down and making sure he got down with an empty mouth. When he asked to get down we'd say that he either had to finish chewing and swallow the food or spit it out. He always chose to spit it out. My theory is that he had taken one more bite than he really wanted and didn't know what to do. Sadly this strategy means that we frequently have partially chewed bits of food spat out into our hands or on the table, but no choking. Not sure if your 11 month old would understand that though.
Maybe try finishing the meal with a few sips of water?
