Adoption

Intro

I've been lurking on this board for sometime now, so I thought I would intro.  DH and I had a m/c in August and are now dealing with IF, but we are also very interested in adoption.  I have wanted to adopt since I was young, and it took DH some time, but, at this point, he is ready.  For now, we are working with DFACS in the foster/adopt program.  Our official orientation is June 19, so we're only at the beginning of what I know can be a long, hard process.  I am sure I will have questions later!  For now, I just wanted to say hello and let you ladies know how helpful your board has been as we begin this process.

Congrats on making this decision and I wish you luck in the process. I've been thinking more and more about adoption and have been researching it but DH still isn't on board. Nice to see a familiar face over here though, I lurk all the time. Embarrassed

  • Hi, Jenn!  Fancy seeing you here!  Wink  Thanks for the kind words, and I hope that DH gets on board soon.  I think it can sometimes take men a bit longer to make the mental leap to adoption?  I am also glad to see a familiar face!!!

  • Sorry for your loss... but welcome :)
Adoption is a crazy journey all on it's own... but it's wonderful and special and perfect for some families.

As for the lurker whose husband isn't on board yet... it's okay :)  Husbands often take longer to come around. Slow and regular postive stories help :)

Thank you for the welcome!  We hope this path works out for us, but we recognize (though, of course, we can't truly understand yet) that it won't necessarily be an easy one.

  • So true. DH wants to do one more IVF cycle but I want to move on. Good luck. So sorry to hear about your loss.

  • Welcome -

DH and I have been dealing with IF for 4+ years and have been approved for foster/adopt for almost a year.  We did a lot of research before choosing this route, the agency, etc.  We've been blessed with multiple opportunites to provide respite for several children with a variety of ages, sibling situations, needs, etc. This gave us time to figure out what we're capable of and eventually expanded our intial criteria. In the next few weeks a bro and sis will move in with us with our intent to adopt.  They've been with their foster parents for 2+ years and we look forward to building our forever family.

    Good Luck!

Keep reading a variety of great literature and texts on the topic.  Network with other foster-adopt couples and enjoy this journey.

  • Welcome to board!  I look forward to hearing more about your journey!
  • Welcome and sorry for your loss. DH and I finish our foster classes on the 19th. I look forward to having another foster mom on the board. Good luck.
