first post ever and a question

Hi ladies!

I have been lurking on here since I became pregnant ( FTM and LO is 5 wks old) and just never posted for whatever reason. I cant tell you how helpful you all have been, this site is so amazing and it helps to know youre not alone on this crazy journey!

So my question is one that I havent seen a post about. During a diaper change (screaming session, same thing :) ) I noticed belly button popping out and kindof purple. Ped appt confirmed that it was an umbilical hernia, which is what I assumed when I saw it. But I was wondering if anyone else has/had this? Doc said it probably will just go away on its own, it doesnt hurt him and its not as scary as it looks. But I cant help but freak out every time he cries and his little belly button looks like its going to explode! Any thoughts are much appreciated!

  • Welcome! I don't think it is too much to worry about, but then again I'm no pediatrician! I know "back in the day" they used to tape pennies over them, however I don't think that is recommended these days.

  • DD has one. Apparently they're pretty common in preemies. Her doctor said they'd fix it surgically if it doesn't resolve in the next few years, but sooner if it's turning purple and seeming to cause her pain.

  • My DD has one too (born at 37w1d). We have her 1 month pedi appointment Monday and I plan to bring it up. But what I've read is what you've said: it will go away on its own in most cases. It isn't fun to look at though.

  • DS1 had one as a baby. I was told if it didn't go away before he was 5 they would do surgery. They usually resolve themselves. He is now 2 and its looking a lot better.
