For years, I have wanted to name my daughter Elle. That was the plan. Now, there's a hole in the plan. To make a long story short, I opened my mouth and the name got used by someone else after I brilliantly inspired them. lol
Anyway, I can't move on. I still love the name, and so I figure that I could give my baby a longer name that can shorten to Elle. My favorite one that I have come up with so far is Estelle, but I'm still kind of on the fence about it. I don't think DH is a huge fan, but who knows? It could grow on him.
I'm just looking for other ideas. What are some good names that can shorten to Elle? Also, if you know of other names with the same qualities as Elle (short, sweet, feminine, but not over the top frilly, and ages well), I'm open to any suggestions. Ideally, I'd find a name that I love MORE than Elle, but that hasn't happened yet.
Re: Names that can shorten to Elle.
Ellen, Helen, Elana, and Elsa
DD's name is Noelle. I could totally see it getting shortened to Elle later on in life. Right now we just call her Noelle or Noey.
ETA: Other suggestions: Eleanor, Brielle, Danielle, Eloise, Eliza, Estelle
Gabrielle?
I like Eleanor and Eloise best.
Do you like the name Eve? Similar sound to Elle.
We have an Ellery (in the overalls). We love it.
Probably to popular but one of our choices was Isabella with nn Ella. You could use Isabelle with nn Elle.
Being an inspiration is awful....it happened to me. And I know "you dont own a name" but it is a bummer to have a name you dont hear often to 3 people saying it is their top choice.
If you are going to call her Elle anyway then what is the point of naming her something else just to shorten it to your original name choice? I am not trying to be snarky - I just honestly don't get the logic.
Some similar names could be Brooke or Claire?
LOL! I know I've said the same thing a few different ways on both of sites, but I thought with a few weeks in between, I'd get different people with different ideas!
Yeah, I'm hung up on it, but it's because it was my plan for so long. I don't think I'd even have a problem still using Elle if our friend who used it didn't have the same last name. That is what gets me the most, and it doesn't feel right to use it now, knowing the 2 girls would have the same first and last name. What I'd really love is to find a name that I love more. I WANT to not be hung up on it and move on, so I keep asking for advice, and looking on name sites, hoping that I'll get a great idea! After all, this baby needs a name, and I still haven't been able to say THIS is her name - about any name, even the one I've loved for years. Maybe I'll have to wait until I see her, I don't know. It's just frustrating.
Yes but you keep asking for names that shorten to Elle or are like Elle. Why not go in the complete opposite direction? Spend a week calling your bump a name completely unlike Elle and see if it grows on you.
The girls wouldn't have the same middle name, would they? That's at least one area where she can be different from her friend.
It's mostly because the people who named their daughter Elle have the same last name as us. I just figured, that could solve the problem and their names would actually be different. I justified it by saying that a longer name would have more substance and a better meaning than Elle, which just means "she" or "girl". Also, it would give her more name options for when she's older.
I am thinking that I am in desperate need of another name and we can decide what fits her better when she's born. Brooke and Claire are nice, but I have associations with both that make me not want to give my child either of those names.
The same last name would put me off too.
Elena, Danielle (not sure of proper spelling).
Similar style (in my mind): Dawn, Nell, Lily, Viola.
Well, I just figure that if it is similar or can shorten to Elle, I may love it. Also, a similar sounding name might flow well with my other kids names. No, the girls would not have the same middle name, so they would be different in that way if we did go with Elle. I still have over 2 months so I just need to keep looking at names and keep an open mind. DH believes that the perfect name will just come to us out of thin air - and when we least expect it, whether it's Elle or something else - but I'm not so sure! I'd like to have this planned! It's hard because I had both of my boys names planned before they were born. They were set - and so was this one, but now I feel just thrown for a loop!
EDIT: See below - meant as a response to Reyka's post.

Thought of a few more:
Giselle, Marielle, Aubrielle, Joelle, Michelle, Janelle
My vote is still for Noelle :-) :-)

I agree...if you want to fall in love with something besides Elle. You should stay away from names that you can shorten to be Elle. Because once you name your DD then you will always think...oh I wish I could call you Elle. And since your hang up is that the girls would have the same name and last name, I would really look for something that cannot be shorten to Elle.
I am sure you may have done this....after searching all the name websites and stalking this board...I started looking at Esty for ideas. Look at the 1st birthday shirts or big sisters monogramed stuff to see if you like something. Also someone on my BMB said they looked at Tinyprints.com.
Ah, ok. It seems like there are some great suggestions here! I'm sure you'll fund the perfect name! I like Elliana, Elena, and what about Elodie?
Elaine
Elise
Eliana /el e ah nuh/
I just went through my son's elementary school yearbook, looking for inspiration. I couldn't believe how boring most of the girls names were! I have been looking at anything and everything where I think an idea may spring up. Hopefully, I'll get an "AH -HA!" moment at some point! I liked the name Lila - that was my second choice name, but the longer I considered it, the less I liked it. I think a big part of that was it doesn't flow as well with my son's names. I wish I wasn't so picky, but I feel I have to be. This child has to live with this name for the rest of her life!
Ooh! I really like Elsa!
