when your baby is born, how long are they planning on taking? My husband was initially taking 3 weeks, but said last night he is going to take 5 weeks (he has to use his vacation time first, so really only about 3 weeks will be FMLA.) 5 weeks off for a new father seemed like a lot to me, but he said most new fathers at his work take that amount off, and his supervisor was the one who suggested it. I'm fine with it-I know we will be without pay for the FMLA (he's the primary income) but I was just curious what amount of time other fathers (or mothers) to be were taking off?
Re: If your husband/significant other is using FMLA...
BF is taking 15 days, they will be paid. I am taking 60 days, paid as well.

I wish mine could spend 5 weeks! But alas, only two, and they are not paid. I am taking the 6 weeks paid at 60% my company offers, and vacation time, and a week payless to add up to two months off, total. It doesn't seem like enough
DH is taking 1 week of his vacation time, and then its back to work. I will have the standard 6 weeks of STD...given there are no complications or a c-section. C-Section would give me 8 weeks of STD.
DH isn't using FMLA. He can use 3 days of sick leave and then combined with his regular days off I think he'll be home about 2 weeks paid. I'm now considering having him take just one and then the other one for the week after I go back to work so DS isn't starting daycare until 8 weeks instead of 7.
I don't want him to exhaust all his leave right after because I won't have any leave again until January and I expect DS to come down with some DC induced colds AND our DC is closed the whole week of Christmas, but we're only off 2 of those days. DH will be a VERY involved dad.
My husband will take one week paid vacation after baby comes. I substitute teach and tutor so my job is different. School won't be in yet so subbing I'll go back to roughly after a month but only for 1-2 days a week, on the days my husband is off and can be home with LO. I tutor through an online site so I plan to keep doing that as much as I can sleep deprived
Plus DH will have more time off with baby about a month after she is born because we're making a trip back east to see our families so he'll take another week of vacation.
My DH is taking 2 weeks off, he's just using vacation time so it will be paid.
I'm taking 12 weeks. A little less than half of that will be at full pay through saved up sick time. (My company requires you to take 2 days PTO before you dip into your sick time, so I've never used sick time in the 3.5 years I've worked here because I'm never sick for 3+ days.) And rest be at 60% pay through Short Term Disability insurance.
DH works for the state so we're kinda lucky about his time off. he's taking 2 weeks of Sick time, then 2 weeks of FMLA (at 60%) then 2 weeks of PTO and 2 more weeks of FMLA.
All told by the time we get there, between sick time, PTO and FMLA he'll be taking about 2 1/2 months off, but he's been saving sick/PTO for over a year now.

About 5 weeks. He works at the hospital at night, so he will be getting his base pay ( No night or weekend differential) I will get about 4 weeks paid, 2 weeks vacation time 2 weeks employer benefit, and I'm still debating if I will take 4 or 8 additional unpaid weeks.
