BabyWise

I'm reading this right now and it seems to be very logical and makes sense to DH and I, but I'm not sure how I feel about just letting a 3 week old CIO. Thoughts? Opinions? Would love to get opinions from both sides if possible...

Re: BabyWise

  • If you do research many sites dont suggest using the method until the baby is 3 or 4 months old when they are able to self sooth. We did a lot of research on it and are gong to try the method down the road, but we are currently soothing the baby when he cries because he has no way to sooth himself yet.  I would just look into more, there are also several good books n the topic. Make sure you thoroughly understand the method before using it because it can cause problems if not used appropriately

  • I haven't read the book and I'm not opposed to CIO, but IMO 3 weeks seems way too young. As pp said, babies can't self-soothe that young.

  • I feel like all my friends and everyone at my church uses this method, but I just can't bring myself to even consider it. So many experts and organizations have condemned the teachings of this book and I think to an extent it's too harsh.

I know many healthy and happy "babywise" kids, so I don't want to be overdramatic. I will probably do cry-it-out, but not until LO is much older, and I'll probably follow Dr. Ferber's advice, not this guy.

  • The book quotes the AAP saying that 1-4 hours of crying a day is normal and healthy for a newborn. It also says some babies need to cry to fall asleep. It says that 15-20 minutes of crying won't hurt the baby as long as its not bc of hunger, pain or a dirty diaper. I don't know...

I can tell you my baby has never cried 4 hours a day, probably not even 1 hour.  She really still only cries when she's hungry, needs to burp or is getting her diaper changed.

I have never let her CIO on purpose, sometimes in the middle of the night my reaction time is slower but that's it.  She sleeps great too, one 5-6 hour stretch followed by a 3-4 hour.  I think at 4-6 months is a better time to initiate sleep training.

  • I have an almost 3 week old and I have read the book cover to cover. I will say my LO is not a crier. He only fusses when he is hungry or when he is going to spit up. He does fuss a bit while he is sleeping but then goes back to bed. I don't get him up to feed until he is fully awake. The times that he has cried, he has been hungry, and I'm glad I fed him

At 3 weeks I maybe would want to trouble shoot a few things before letting them CRI. Acid reflux etc?????

I do like this book though. I have had good results with feed/waketime/naptime routines. A 3 week old isn't lways predictable, but I find, so far, its working for us.

  • I am not a fan of CIO unless everyother method has been tried. But there is a difference between fussing and crying, I let my kids fuss but full out crying I try to fix whats wrong.

I know several people who have used this method.  and they all LOVE it..   I am doing this method but I'm modifying the CIO part for the first 6 weeks or so.  I am definitely doing the Feed wake sleep cycles and I am putting her in her crib during her sleep cycle but if she cries for more than 10 minutes I do pick her up and rock her.  It usually puts her to sleep within a minute or two and then I lay her back down.   Also,  I make sure to spend PLENTY of time cuddling and playing while she's awake.

Since we've started this process, she has begun sleeping 3 to 4 hour stretches (meaning she eats every 4 to 5 hours) at night.   It's definitely helped me to keep my sanity which of course means that I am a better mother during the day.

Also to note, my sister was COMPLETELY anti-babywise and she has 2 children.  Her kids are EXACTLY like the child described in the book that was a child of attachment parenter. Her 2 1/2 year old is mouthy and completely out of control.

  • I have read the book more than once and don't see where you're getting let a 3 week old CIO.  Ezzo says to expect your baby to start sleeping 7 or 8 hours through the night between 6 and 8 weeks, or by 12 weeks if he's a late bloomer.  He also says to feed your baby when he's hungry, but to shoot for feeding every 2.5 to 3 hours, and to make it a goal for your baby to be awake for a while after eating.  To implement his teachings, I would just focus on eat-play-sleep order and trying to get full feedings and it is reasonable to expect your baby to start sleeping longer at night on his own without CIO in a few weeks time.  If by 12 weeks your baby is still not sleeping through the night I would defer to his CIO techniques.  This startedgy worked well w/ a baby I nannied and also w/ my son who is approaching 6 weeks and is sleeping 6 to 7 hours in a row at night without having to CIO.

  • Gary Ezzo, the creator of the babywise method has ABSOLUTELY no credentials to be advising parents about anything!!!!!  Before you buy into this method, go do a bunch of research on babywise and Gary Ezzo!!!!  I wish I would have!  I tried babywise before doing this research and my baby ended up in the hospital with severe dehydration for a week.  I later did my research and found out some scary stuff about this man and this method that is based on his extreme religious beliefs. These are medical issues he is advising you on and has no business doing so! Don't be fooled by the MD that has jumped on board to cash in on the fortune Ezzo is making to support his extreme christian agenda.  Even the church he started out in cut ties with him.  I could go on and on, but I'll let you look for yourself! Better yet, ask your pediatrician or look at what the American Academy of Pediatrics has to say about this method!

Wha? I haven't read the book but I'd love to see this part. I'd love to hear  how feeding on demand correlates with mouthiness and behavior issues.

  • If you research Ezzo he sounds like a whack job to me. No way will I listen to a man that correlates Jesus' cruxifiction to letting a baby CIO. A newborn is too young to CIO...they are learning to feel safe and to trust.
