Running a train on some pineapple!

I'm scheduled to be induced June 18 because LO is falling behind in his growth. But at my appointment Wednesday she said my cervix is still closed and if nothing changes I'll have to have a c-section. I REALLY want to avoid this, so I am eating tons and tons of pineapple. I read that something in it can help to thin your cervix. Don't know if it's true or not but at this point I'll try anything to avoid having a c-section! Has anybody else heard this about pineapple? Aside from pineapple and sex what else have you ladies tried?

Re: Running a train on some pineapple!

  • My doula told me it's the core of the pineapple, and to eat eggplant parmesan.

  • Dude, I have tried so much crazy sh*t to no avail-- WARNING, though, about the pineapple: it is super acidic and will trigger your reflux (if this is an issue for you) like crazy.  It will also cut up your mouth like nobody's business.  Make sure you drink some milk first and during eating to coat your mouth.  I don't even like milk, but it is the only thing that would curb the burning.

Of course, I am a giant idiot and tried to eat a whole pineapple in one sitting.  I heard you have to eat a ton of fresh (not canned) pineapple for it to work.

I also heard walking and evening primrose oil are the only reliable cervix thinners.  Also that raspberry leaf tea.  But, I have been doing this like a nut and it is not working for me personally.

Good luck!  Let me know if you find anything that works!

  • Why are they going straight to a c/section instead of trying to induce you with Cervadil/Pitosin for a vag delivery first?

I would seriously question your doc/MW about this especially since you are so against a c/s. These may not work and you may still need a c/s, but at least you would have tried.

    Worth asking about.

  • I, too, have heard it's mainly the core of the pineapple that's most beneficial (it has prostaglandins that ripen the cervix), but eating the rest wont hurt either. You could also try Evening Primrose Oil (take 2 orally in the am, and 2 vaginally in the pm). And sex. Semen also has lots of prostaglandins that can help soften the cervix.

But I do agree with PP; why the jump to a c-section just b/c you're not thinning? I'd speak to your care provider again and insist on trying induction first.

I've seen people talking about the primrose... Do you just swallow the pills?

I am definitely asking at my next appointment on Wednesday. The doctor I saw last appointment wasn't my regular doctor and I didn't think she was super friendly either. She didn't really explain a whole lot even when I asked her questions. I just left confused and frustrated. But after looking it all up I did see about the cervadil and got even more confused on why she would go straight to a c-section. Basically I'm waiting until Wednesday to find out what's really going to happen

When you do them vaginally do you cut them open first? Sorry I'm new to all of this and don't have anybody IRL that I can talk to

  • I have been sitting on an exercise ball and bouncing/rolling and rocking my hips while sitting with my legs far apart. Actually I am using an exercise ball to sit on at work. I am also trying to take a lot of walks. I am basically trying to do anything possible to get baby to put more pressure on my cervix.

My problem is that while I am dilated, my cervix and baby are up high so I am trying to help move her down.

I too think it is weird that your doc would just say c-sec, maybe get a second opinion?

I'm definitely going to try the exercise ball. I really want to do the walking thing but my feet ankles and legs are so incredibly swollen it hurts to stand

  • I ate an entire pineapple, core and all, and all I got was heartburn.  It was worth a shot I thought.  (And the pineapple was really good.)  Oh well.  I have a NST today, and the doctor has already scheduled my induction for Tuesday.

  • Just today my doctor said sex, spicy food, and exercise.  I guess that means I'm on a strict Thai and Mexican diet until LO arrives!  Ha!
  • I've been walking every day and I've heard bouncing in an exercise ball helps.  You have to eat a LOT of pineapple to make a difference - and it all has to be fresh.  I ate one in a day and a half (before I realized it was the core you had to eat and like 7 or some insaine number to make a difference!) and it tore my mouth up.  I'm not planning to eat anymore.

Nope, I insert them whole. Your body will break the gel caps down easily enough. But be sure to do it before bed and wear a panty liner, as it can leak through the night.

  • I've heard pineapple, walking, sex, raspberry leaf tea, spicy foods, peppermint oil on ankle pressure points. and on the boards today red wine. As for the sex, I was told (and have read) that it's actually the orgasm that thins the cervix, and that a high percentage of women have their thinning prolonged by all the things in sperm. I'm about to start trying everything myself... I'll keep you posted on what works for us!

Really? I heard it was the semen that helped thin you out. Huh weird... Well I already told DH to pick up some primrose on his way home tonight so I'll give that a go to!

  • Did anybody else read the study about dates in Fit Pregnancy? Apparently women who ate 6 dates a day over their last 4 weeks were 2x more dilated than those who ate none. I love dates, so I'm giving it a try.
  • i've heard of eggplant parmesan helping. Also are you taking evening primrose oil and raspberry leaf tea?

I'm having DH pick up primrose oil to start tonight. I can't stand tea so I don't think I'll be able to do that one
