Any chance I can go into labor?

I am at almost 38 weeks.  I am a FTM and am strep positive.  I had my first cervical check today and my doctor said nothing is happening, no dilation, nothing.  She said it can change at any time, but it is unlikely I will go into labor anytime soon.

The quandry is that we were invited to my husbands home town 3.5 hours away for a visit and BBQ this weekend.  I feel like it is okay to go, but my husband is freaking out about the possibility of me going into labor that far from our hospital.

Did any of you go into labor within 3 days of being checked and told that nothing was happening?  Would you go 3.5 hours away this weekend?  Thanks ladies for the advice.

  • I would say go for it.  IF you start feeling crampy or having discharge that looks like your mucus plug then head back towards your house.  At my 37 week 4 day cervical check I was 1cm...at my 38 week 4 day check I was still 1 cm and the Dr. doesn't think anything is happening any time soon.  Of course every one is different but the majority of FTM don't have a 3 hour labor... Live a little!!! Worse case scenario the baby comes and you have a good story right??!! Lol

  • I agree with PP. I would go, relax, and enjoy yourself. You won't regret the get away. What I ended up doing when I went out of town the weekend I turned 37 weeks was packed a bag for both me/hubby and anything I would want for baby just in case we had to head back I had everything already with me :)

  • As you know everyone is different. I personally wouldnt do it because nothing was going on for me either when the doc did a cervical check, however, when I went back to see him a day later, I was 2 cm dialated, and went into labor later that night. I ended up delivering at 38 weeks...

  • I would say it's ok to go but DH wouldn't drive two hours away for the day a few weeks ago b/c he was too nervous and we didn't go.  If he's nervous he probably won't have a good time and will be a wreck while you're there that something will happen.
  • I would be a little bit wary of going, simply b/c it is hard to sit in a car that long. If you do go, I would be sure he stops at least 1/2 way there and back so that you can get up and walk, change positions, etc. On the way to my SIL's wedding (at 37 weeks), I drove just an hour and was in crampy pain a lot of the time. I didn't say anything to DH b/c we were late and I didn't want to worry him (and I knew it wasn't labor), but it was terribly uncomfortable. If I had to do it again, I would make DH drive so that I could try to adjust my position a little more.

  • With my DS, I was 1cm and not thinned out on a Thursday.  My water broke Friday night.  Sometimes there isn't a lot of indication ahead of time that labor is about to begin.

  • i was 37.5 weeks and went from connecticut to virginia for my cousins wedding, and i was fine. it wasn't even that uncomfortable, just make sure you stop often so you can stretch and pee and what not.
