bumps on LOs neck?

On Tuesday, DH noticed a bump on LOs neck.  It is under the skin (with no mark on the skin) and is about the size of a small pea.  It is about 3/4" away from his spine towards his ear and about an inch below his hairline.  I felt around his neck for other spots and found one that is about half the size in a matching location on the other side (mirroring it).

We called the pedi for an appointment and have one this afternoon at 3:15 (the office is closed on Wed.).

I am trying not to freak out and haven't google searched it, but am thinking it might be lymph nodes.  DS has been teething like mad (6 teeth all at once), has gotten a few bug bites when we have been outdoors, and was exposed to a nasty virus from his cousins (which he seems to have avoided-it's been more than a week and a half).

Anyone with any similar experiences or words of advice?

DD has something similar, but below her ear.  I had her pedi look at it and she said it's a lymph node and it's not uncommon in babies.

  • Thanks, good to know.  I will feel better after we see pedi today.

  • N has something similar but, from the sounds of it, a little higher.  The doc said it's lymph nodes.  Since you have matching ones, I think it's likely nothing to worry about.

  • We had the same thing, doctor also confirmed it was Lymph Nodes. She also showed us where DD had some in her lower stomach where it meets the leg. Very common.
  • Thanks, everyone.  The pedi did say that they were lymph nodes and most likely from a recent fall that caused a small egg on his head.  Any swelling due to teething, bumps, bug bites, etc. can cause the lymph nodes to become enlarged.
