Taking DS out

So I need some advice. As I've mentioned here before, DH and I are LARPers. I haven't been to an event in over a year (we didn't want any accidents while I was pregnant), but there's one this weekend. I'm considering dressing DS up and bringing him to the event for a couple hours. The game has a blue headband system which would ensure he wouldn't be near combat.

The problem is that it's going to get to a high of 88 in the city where it's taking place. It might be a couple degrees cooler since they do it in a park with trees, so I'd be able to keep him in the shade. The park is known for ticks, but I don't plan to put him on the ground or really venture into the brush with him. It's also a couple hours away, so we'd be spending more time driving than LARPing. If he got too hot, I'd have to retreat to the air conditioned car or just go ahead and leave.

I'm open to opinions as DH is apathetic and I'm sorta on the fence. My concerns are the heat and the drive making the trip not worth it. Then again, I haven't seen a lot of these people in a long time, and I've been itching to get back to regular events. Would you personally risk taking your LOs outside in the heat for a few hours for the chance to hang out with friends?

Re: Taking DS out

  • Ugh, I have no idea what LARPing is but I live in South Texas.  Lately, the high has been 100.  DS#1 does a lot of out doors stuff and I always take the baby with me.  We have a portable fan that hooks to his stroller (you can get it at BRU for a little less than $20) and he usually does well in the shade with that.

  • If I were in that situation, I would probably give it a try and see how it goes. There are plenty of babies all over the world that live in hot places without air conditioning, so, within reason, that isn't a huge concern for me. Worst case scenario, you end up driving a whole lot for not much time at the event and that wouldn't be the end of the world for me.

It's Live Action Role Playing.  Think Dungeons and Dragons but acting it out.  We rent out a campground for the weekend and step into the role of our characters for the whole weekend.  We fight with padded boffer weapons made of PVC, foam, and duct tape.  It's a lot of fun and quite theraputic to escape the real world.  It's where I met my husband, and it's been the plan all along to take DS to a few events when he's old enough.  It's kind of a last minute idea to take him to an event this weekend.  He already has a chainmaille cloth diaper cover.

    I'll second that!

When we are in sunny situations I'll often use little binder clips to clip a light muslin swaddle around LO's stroller to keep the sun off of him. He has also had quite a few naps in our cars with the doors all open and the breeze blowing across him (try to park in the shade with the car angled to the prevailing wind direction).

Where are you at in South Texas?  DH and I spent 9 months in McAllen.  The heat is INSANE!

  • Yay LARPing!

My suggestion would be to either just go out to hang while hubby rp's (or vice versa) and the one with the baby can stay in the out of character area and help with any sort of admin stuff that needs to be done or hang out at the refreshment table. I don't worry too much about heat for babies (babies were raised just fine long long before air conditioning, even in the tropics) as much as the sun. Make sure that you have sure ways of keeping baby in the shade.

What sort of game world is it? It might also be fun to play a non combat character who'd have reason to have a baby or a 'small familiar'.

  • Event unfortunately got cancelled this weekend, but thanks for the input and ideas.  I'll probably try to bring him next month.

It's a medieval fantasy setting with elves, dragons, vampires, etc.  I was getting costumes together actually to go out as a gypsy family with non combat roles.  My brother joked that my character could be trying to sell the baby but for an outrageous sum so noone could actually pay it.  It would be pretty funny, but DH is worried we'd run into someone rich enough to actually pay it.  lol

  • So much fun! I did the Medieval Fantasy type LARPing once or twice with hubby, but I have to admit to being a dedicated World of Darkness fan myself.

You'll be more prepared for the next event!
