S/O Crawling, Bedsharing Naps (See Post Below)

DS has decided that he's a big boy and that naps are for babies. I have the same problems as the post below, where he basically prefers crawling/moving to naps. I've tried all the tips below and nothing works. My best technique is to put him in the car, but that doesn't work really well b/c he usually hates his carseat.

Anyway, if this is how things are going to be, how much longer can I expect him to be in this new phase? I'm spent. Thanks.

Re: S/O Crawling, Bedsharing Naps (See Post Below)

  • Can you wear him in a carrier and go for a walk in the neighborhood?

    What about a stroller?

We've been through a couple phases with my son where motion was the only thing that put him to sleep. My husband used to do bedtime with an evening walk through the neighborhood in the stroller. We're currently putting him down for nap every day by driving around. So far our phases have lasted a month or two before he moves on to a new technique.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, they don't work. He used to go to sleep easily in any of our carriers (with me or DH). Now he screams and claws at my face when I put him in a carrier. I even put him in the RS and nurse him while walking around or while bouncing on my exercise ball. Just as he's starting to drift off, he starts whining really loudly and arching his back trying to get down to the floor. He loves rides in the stroller, but hates falling asleep in it.

The only thing that works well is when DH gives him a ride sitting on his shoulders (like piggy back), but I'm not sure how long that will last once he figures out that daddy's shoulders = sleepytown.

So, hopefully I'll only have to put up with this sh*t for another 3 weeks or so?

    . . . and then it'll be a new issue. yea.

This is going to sound mean perhaps, but when he starts fighting the nap don't give in. My LO does the exact same thing when he's overtired - as soon as he starts drifting off he starts fighting the sleep. I just hold him and shush him and after a bit, usually seconds, of fussing/back arching he goes back to nursing. Sometimes it takes a few times of this but he will fall asleep.

I had to adjust my mentality that sleep will always come peacefully. If I time his naps right he goes down easily, but if we wait too long there's a fight involved. It's frustrating and doesn't feel very "AP" to fight your kid for a nap, but I know he needs his sleep and sometimes that means being the "bad guy".

  • Same question - how long will this last?

I actually hired a pediatrician/sleep specialist who makes house calls and is coming today at 4 to try and help us figure out what the hell is going on... will keep you posted if I get any insights.
