Should I order the short or the long certificate?

Re: Birth certificate question

  • I ordered the long. It was only a couple of $$ more, and I figured the more info I had the better. You never know what will be required in the future, and you can't get caught unprepared if you have too much info.

  • I would get at least 1 copy of the long to put into a lock box.

This is what I figured as well. Also when I asked my SIL what she ordered for her son she said she got both but has yet to see a use or benefit of the short form since everything so far requiring his BC has asked for it in long form.

  • Is this a state thing? I was just filling out the application for his birth certificate and it didn't ask me this.

Im not sure. All i know is they filled everything out as far as the application goes for us in the hospital so the state had it on file. But if I wanted a copy of the BC for my records or what not, I had to go through the health dept and order it and subsequently pay for it. When ordering it I was offered the option of a full copy or a "cliff notes" version.

Yeah, same here.  I don't think it was an option for us.

See my explanation above. It wasn't anything having to do with the BC application. Once my state has a BC on file, you have to order a paper or e-copy through the health dept for yourself. When ordering it, you can opt for the full BC or a "cliff notes" version for a smaller fee.

  • Oh, I see.  Where I live the state automatically sends you one in the mail.  You don't pay for it.  Ours is small, like half a piece of paper (I guess the short version).

You're lucky! We had to pay $50 for ours, and the process was a pain.

We got ours for free too.  It was sent to us after we filled out the info in the hospital looks just like our marriage cert.  Weird.  That sucks that they make you pay for it for your own.
