no more swaddle= no more sleep!

I recently stopped swaddling my LO and it is NOT going well.  She was fighting the swaddle so much that I had to wait until she was sleeping before I could swaddle her and even then, sometimes when I laid her down in her crib she would start fighting it and I would have to rub her chest for several minutes until she fell back asleep.  Most mornings I would wake up and she would have both arms out.  I figured she didn't want to be swaddled anymore so I stopped this week. Additionally, she likes to roll onto her side to sleep and is so close to rolling all the way over that I am scared if she is swaddled she will be stuck on her belling with her face buried in the mattress.

So, I still put her in the sleep sack but I swaddle her under her arms.  The first night (Monday), she slept her usual, 9-7, waking up once around 4 to eat.  I was thrilled.  The past 2 nights have been horrible.  Last night, she woke up 5 times before 7!

Re: no more swaddle= no more sleep!

  • Since she did fine with it the first night, it may be something else like growing causing her to act differently at night time.

  • Yeah, I think they're at the age where a lot of babies stop liking the swaddle (the end of the 4th trimester)... She probably prefers her arms being free, but needs some time to adjust to it. My DD has never been swaddled and at first she was whacking herself in the face constantly, but now she's figured out that it sucks and stopped lol. Give her some time.... And if your comfortable with it (especially if she's already rolling over anyways) you could try sleeping her on her belly - moat babies sleep much better that way. We tummy sleep for naps and it works great :)

  • You said the first night she did great then stopped since then. Has anything else changes? Temperature change, storm moving in, etc? You may just need to do an even slower transition. I am not looking forward to stopping the swaddle. She still does fine with hers and keeps her hands for knocking the pacifier out. :)

I thought about putting her on her belly to sleep.  She has already rolled from belly to back so I know if she wanted to she could turn herself over.  I am still worried to leave her on her belly during the night.

  • Look up the baby merlin magic sleep sack. My DD started revolting against her swaddle. She's been ok with her arms out at night now, but naps are another story. My sleep suit just arrived today and DD took a 2.5 hour nap this pm. Supposedly the weight and thickness of the suit helps to mitigate the twiches that wake them up. Plus, its too fluffy to allow them to roll onto their stomachs.

This should be *won't allow them tp roll*

  • We have never swaddled and DS was only getting up 1 time per night. Now he is getting up 5 times. He's definitely in a growth spurt. Maybe that's what is happening for you too?
  • Maybe the 3month growth spurt?! When I stopped swaddling ds1, he had some rough nights, but got used to it. My suggestion, don't turn back. You have to stop it eventually, so might as well keep going. I'm sure she'll be fine in a few days. This too shall pass....

I agree with this.  The first few nights unswaddled were kind of rough, but they were rough with the swaddle too because she would grunt and fuss trying to escape.  She is doing better now, although she has started sucking on her arm and hand so that wakes her up now.

  • Our DS was not one to be swaddled, but was happy on her back sleeping. The past few weeks, though, she's only happy on her tummy to sleep. She has been able to control her head since she was 2 weeks, though, and has rolled and is close to crawling. The doctor said it's fine, and she's a much happier camper, even sleeping through the night the past 3 nights! WOO-HOO!!! So, I know it might seem scary, but maybe give her tummy a try? Even some babies who "hate" tummy time like being on their tummies when it's time to sleep. Remember, our parents generation was told that we HAD to sleep on our tummies Wink Good luck!
