My breastpump was FREE!!!!!!!

I know I already posted about this, but I had to share again.  My girlfriend who has the same insurance as me told me that breastpumps were covered.  It was about a 40. copay.  I called the company and ordered the Medela Freestyle.  Last night night I received a phone call that it shipped.  Awesome.  When I got home from work today I called the company and asked if there was a co-pay or any amount due.  They told me that my insurance covered the WHOLE cost!!!!  Double Awesome!  I love free things.  LOL.  I would have never even thought to check if it was not for my friend.  Just to get the word out there, I would call your insurance companies and see if it is covered!!!

boo, Aetna doesn't cover?  My DH just switched jobs, and our insurance is switching from Anthem to Aetna.  The old one only covered a manual, and they would only cover it if we put in a claim within 30 days before or after the birth/due date.

I was hoping Aetna would, but it sounds like no...

  • FYI -- just because your insurance card says Anthem or Aetna or anything else doesn't mean that your insurance does or does not cover what someone else's insurance covers. If you have employer sponsored insurance, in many cases these companies just administer the insurance plans and your employer decides what level of coverage your plan offers.

  • Oh, I'm jealous!!  I called my insurance last week and got a girl who had no idea what she was talking about and told me all I needed to do was have my OB send them a pre-authorization for one.  I saw my OB on Monday and he did just that, but when I called back a different lady looked more into it and it looks like mine will only be covered if LO is born before 34 weeks and has to stay in the NICU.

  • This might be of some interest to you ladies.  :)  Part of healthcare reform is a women's health mandate that goes into effect on 8/1, and it includes breast pumps/supplies.  You'll have to check with your health insurance company to see when your plan will be updated with this benefit.

  • Thanks to someone posting here, I called Kaiser to ask about whether I was covered too. They said that my current insurance covers supplemental equipment and that it was covered. I need to have my OB refer me to the lactation nurses to find out what I can get. Yay for saved money. :) Thanks for reminding people to check.

  • For those that are worried just because they have a certain type of insurance, call and ask. The worst they will do is say no. I had Kaiser with ds and didn't get a pump (didn't ask either) even though I had great coverage compared to my husband's plan (no copays vs $20 for office and $250 for admittance), but this time I called abs they said it was covered. It's worth a try.

  • I have Anthem and they said it is covered but has to be medically neccesary and requires a medical prescription and to be purchased at a medical supply place.

Where did you get yours from?  Straight from Medela?

I called an company called Edgepark.   I told them what pump I wanted and gave them all my insurance information.  They checked with my insurance and called my Dr. (I guess to check that I was pregnant) and then it was approved.  It took less than a week.  You can call in the order and they call you to let you know the cost before they ship it.  My friend had a 40. co-pay and mine was free.  Same insurance company.
