Baby Showers

First timer - do people normally serve drink-drinks?

Hi ladies,

I'm throwing my first shower this fall so this is also an introduction of sorts :) The only shower I've ever been to was my own which was a warped occasion. DS was born 10 weeks early and was in NICU, I had a strict pumping schedule, and my house had just burned down. In retrospect I should have asked the shower to be canceled because I was a hot mess.

Up until I gave birth (literally) I was working at a bar/restaurant so when I got to my shower hard liquor was being served.

So - as I gear up to plan a shower for the lovely girl who threw mine - are drinky drinks normal or is no alcohol acceptable?

TIA

  • Good god, you had a rough time of it.

There has always been alcohol at my showers. I am from a big drinking circle/family though.

There is usually alcohol at showers I attend, but it just depends on who is hosting the MTB's shower.

  • I've seen it both ways.  We had mimosas at my 11am shower last month, but I've been to plenty of showers where there was no alcohol.  It's really up to you and the mom-to-be.

I think it just depends on what you want to have there or maybe even ask the MTB what she thinks. For me, I wouldn't want alcohol at my shower for a few reasons. 1. I don't really drink and neither does my husband 2. One of his grandparents is very religiously against it and I wouldn't want to offend anyone and 3. I think it would be a waste of my hosts money, but that's just in my situation. Go with what you and your MTB want.

I've been to both - with and without alcohol.  Both of my baby showers with be without alcohol, which was the hosts' decision.  Personally, it's nice to have a glass of wine or a mimosa at a shower but it's not necessary.

  • Great perspectives - thanks! I want to make a fun seasonal punch so perhaps I'll make something that can be complimented by adding some champagne :)

It's going to be very small (10-15?) and held in my apartment.

  • While I like having alcohol at showers, I never, ever expect it.  Youre fine to not have any if that works better for you

  • Any shower I've thrown had champagne and OJ, along with coffee. But I always throw brunch ones.
  • It's split here and just depends on the group. You can't go wrong either way IMO.  I'll never forget the shower where they had separate punchbowls for the alcohol drink and the regular punch. My grandma got confused and never drinks, so it was a little funny to see her tipsy.

  • I've never been to a shower (bridal or baby) with alcohol, except one that was at a restaurant and you could order a drink if you wanted, but then you were paying for it yourself.

That being said, there will be champagne punch served at mine.  I think either way is perfectly fine.

  • Yes, we serve alcohol at any event we hold no matter what it is.  I've never been to a shower w/o at least wine or mimosas.

  • For a baby shower, no alcohol is perfectly acceptable since the MTB can't/generally doesn't partake. I didn't serve alcohol at the shower I threw for my sister, but it was a foofy luncheon-type affair with mostly older ladies. If it had been a younger crowd, I probably would have served a white sangria or some kind of punch, but nothing that MTB couldn't have a little of (i.e. no hard liquor) and only one, prepared-type drink. As a pp said, it really depends on your guest list but I do think it's tacky to serve anything (liquor, lunch meat, sushi, etc.) that MTB cannot have.

Super - I'll consult MTB and see what she'd prefer. Especially since she threw my shower! I like the champagne idea because that's pretty controlled. Like I said, I was working at a bar so booze was free flowing. Personally, it bugged me. I would have preferred no alcohol at all but I was in the midst of a touchy situation.
