VBAC

VBAC again

My name is Wendy and I was on this forum before about 2 years ago. I had a successful VBAC. I am now pregnant again. No problem right? I have done it before I can do it again. WRONG! We just found out yesterday that it is twins! The midwife I found last time will not do it and they won't even try at Vanderbilt's midwifery center! I don't really know where to go or what to do! : ( Any help would be appreciated!

Last I read, ACOG's recommendation for VBAC candidates included twins.

What other provider options do you have in your area?  I can't imagine someone not allowing you a TOL with twins especially as a secondary VBAC.  It surprises me!

  • Congrats!

Have you tried contacting your local ICAN chapter? They are probably the best resource for VBAC-friendly providers. Can you talk to your current MW if she knows anyone who will support a VBAC with twins? Is it just her opinion, or it comes from the person in charge?

I agree that since you've already had one successful VBAC, planning a vaginal birth with twins should be reasonable. hth and good luck!

  • I did contact them and got some references for doctors at Vanderbilt. The reason the midwifes THERE won't take me on there is that they do not do twin births at all. MY midwife was just worried that twins would put to much strain on my scar and she is just to scared to do it at her little clinic with no back-up. Most of the hospitals around me have a ban on VBACs whether it is your first or second and the twins thing doesn't help my case any! The doctors offices I have been referred to and talked to so far today have said that they MAY try but I would have to meet with them first because it is case by case and even if they did allow a TOL I would have to be on constant monitoring : ( doesn't sound ideal to me at all!!!

  • Well, congratulations on twins and welcome back to the board Big Smile  Sorry to hear your original plans are working out for you.  Is there an OB practice you can look into??  I have a midwife friend that just moved to Tennessee a few months ago, so I can ask her if she knows any care providers that would take you on Smile  If I get any info, I'll send it to you in a PM and let you know!  GL!!!

  • I wasn't keen on constant monitoring until I learned that at the hospital I will be choosing their constant monitoring is wireless.  It's a telemetry unit--a belt you wear that transmits signals without a wire and you can even wear it in the water and totally while walking around.  Maybe this will sound better to you too?  See if this is how they do it???
  • Before I had my first I thought I would hate constant monitoring. But I found it was more annoying for them to keep taking the thing on and off. Yes, fetal heart monitors are dumb and don't improve outcomes. But having it on isn't that big of a deal (I thought anyway ... for 2 very different labors, both no epidural until pushing).
