I voted behind the passenger seat, we have 2 car seats in a Nissan Sentra, so no one gets the middle spot (at least not until all of my dreams come true and our other car dies, forcing us to buy a minivan!)
I have a compact SUV (Ford Escape) and I have her car seat in the middle of the back seat. I have to actually get in the back seat and sit down in order to get her into the seat, but it's not really a big deal.

I will say its making me nervous having ours on the passenger side now. The accident I was in last week (totaled my car) the impact was directly where the carseat would have been if it had been DH's car. (her seat was in the middle in my car, and she wasn't in the car anyway)
I still think it's probably the best place, but after that accident I can see what they say about it not being the safest place since that's where your instinct is to take impact in a wreck.
We have the Graco Cuddle. DH's seat is back far enough that her seat won't fit in. In fact, her infant seat barely fit and was snug against the corner of the passenger seat. She fits fine behind my seat because I'm short and I have my seat moved up.
DS car seat is behind the passenger seat. I'm so short that I would have an extremely hard time getting him in and out of the middle. I didn't have a problem when he was in the infant carrier because I could sort of use momentum (sp?) to get it into the base.
Ours could fit in the middle (Pilot) but I prefer to use the Latch. Also DS sits FF behind the drivers seat and I don't want him to be able to reach DD who RF's.
Although I would love for his covertable to be in the middle, our Jeep Liberty is not Latch equiped to do so. For now he is behind the passanger seat. The guy that installed it is looking into ways that we could possibly move it to the middle.

I have a compact but am lucky that our convertible seat fits in the middle and up front DH and I still have enough legroom to be comfortable. I guess we got the right size convertible! It is difficult to get her in and out, but well worth the trouble knowing she is in the safest place we can put her.
our doesn't fit in the middle either and if I put it behind me RF I'd have my seat way to far up, so behind the passenger side until she's forward facing

I have to put it in the middle because otherwise no one can sit in the other seats as they have to be pushed to far forward! I drive a ford focus. We will have to invest in a bigger car when we decide on having another child.

We are still using the infant seat (snugride 35 and she is still probably under 20 lbs.), however, it is in the middle.

Same for us.
