Someone talk to me about Calgon....

So I use Charlie's Soap......I loved it when we were at my old house when I had a regular top loader. Never had stink issues. Never had to strip.  Now since I have moved and started using a HE front loader we've started having stink issues.  I strip and they get all nice and clean and then 2 washes later they are starting to smell again.  I started using the wet towel trick and adding more water to the wash but nothing is working as well as it did in my old house.

Ive been hearing a lot of talk about Calgonin addition to your regular laundry detergent and just curious about it. What exactly does it do? Does it only work in certain situations? Do you use it with every wash?  Fill me in with all the details.

Re: Someone talk to me about Calgon....

  • I use Calgon b/c I have hard water.  If you have hard water, the water needs to be softened.  The minerals prevent the detergent from working the way it should.  I add 1/2 cap of liquid Calgon to each load and have found it keeps the stink away.

Pew have very hard/acidic water but I have a whole house water softener. I guess Calgon would not work for me then?

  • What stink is it, mildew, urine, barnyard?  If its urine, try cutting back your charlies to 1/2 a scoop and adding in an extra rinse.  My routine for a HE FL is:

quick wash warm water no detergent
Heavy Duty wash hot water (1/2 scoop charlies with calgon, or 1 full scoop of tiny bubbles no calgon), prewash (no detergent) and extra rinse. [my machine gives me the option of adding a prewash and extra rinse to every washing option]

Even though you have a whole house water softener, I say try the calgon anyway.

    This is my wash routine...

1 - Rinse and Spin cycle with extra water (about 30 minutes) and no soap

2 - I then start the rinse cycle again to get some extra water/weight in the machine and before it is high enough to cover the door, I power the machine off and also add a drenching wet towel to trick the machine into using more water.  I then do a "Sanitary wash" (which is "extra hot") with stain cycle, extra water, and extra rinse.  I used to use only 1 scoop of Charlies but they were not smelling clean out of washer so now I am using 2 scoops. This takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes.

3 - I then follow with a regular hot wash with no detergent.  This takes another 45 minutes.

They come out of the wash smelling super clean and then they reak of urine the second they are peed in.  The overnight diapers smell somewhat ammonia-ish because the urine is so strong.
