If you tried caster oil, advice please (I'm desperate!)

Either this stubborn baby needs to decide to get the show on the road in about the next 48 hours, or we'll be going the induction route :(  I'm trying caster oil tonight because night seems to be when I have the most frequent and regular contractions.  My doula said to just mix 2 oz with orange juice, but I'm open to other cocktail recipes that may have worked for others.

Anyone else try caster oil?  Did it work?

  • I did, and I used that same recipe. It did not work for me and only made me crampy that evening. I, too, was desperate!

  • My MW's told me not to use OJ.  The acidity with the effects of CO will be hell on  your stomach.  Instead, they had me make a CO milkshake.  The theory is that the milk and ice cream will help coat your stomach to help prevent vomiting.

They said anywhere from 2-4 oz.  I went with a solid 3.  Mixed in the 3oz, with 2 scoops of ice ccream some milk and chocolate syrup.  Drank is at 5 am, and went back to sleep.  Was woken up with contractions at 8:30 ish.  Went into full labor at 4ish that afternoon had DS 10 hrs later.  It was a great birth since I was able to move around and use the tub like I wanted which wouldn't have happened if I had the pit.  I did get deydrated despite trying everything and had to have one IV of fluids, but that was is.  Good luck.

  • I mixed 4 tbsp of CO with the Naked Mango smoothie drink (I've been obsessed with that stuff lately) and it wasn't very good but I just chugged it and carried on.  Did that around 1pm, and by 5pm my contractions were about 5 minutes apart.  By 8pm, we were at the hospital and they were 1-2 minutes apart.  After trying to hold off giving birth (I was GBS+ so we were trying to get both vaccine doses in - didn't make it), I ended up delivering at 12:43am.  And contrary to what people say, I didn't have any bowel problems during delivery and I think it actuallty made my first BM easier haha!

I had a very fast progressing labor - went from 4 1/2cm to 9cm in 2 hrs, and only pushed for 10 minutes before DS was born - the pushing would have gone faster but he had himself in a chokehold, so he ended up getting stuck.  I don't know if I can credit that to the CO or not, but maybe?

Good luck!!  I know what it's like to hit the desperation point.  Hope it works for you!!!

  • Thanks, ladies! The castor oil did the trick ... Well, that or the sex, nipple stimulation, spicy dinner. I took it at 8:00 Tuesday night and Landon James was born about 16 hours later :)  Also a very fast progressing labor once things got going.
