EPIC FAIL: 1 year photos and advice.

We attempted to get 1 year photos today. We went to portrait innovations which we loved for her 6m photos. We had an appointment (well before nap time) but they ran an hour late. After daughter had run around for the studio for an hour waiting she was bored, crabby and probably having teething pain. The photographer we had was no help(the other two photographers were going to great lengths to help the families keep the kids happy for the pics) We got about 20 awkward or tearful photos and she said "well lets see if we gots some and we can do some more." None of them were even remotely good. Then I said let's try one more time and she replied, "We dont' have time because I have another appointment." So we left. Another issue we had was DD walks all the time now and really did not want to stand or sit still to attempt to get many shots. How did other mothers of walking LOs get them the sit/stand in one place?

Re: EPIC FAIL: 1 year photos and advice.

  • At Christmas we had this problem.  We went to Target and they were running so behind that by the time they got to us, they barely spent any time with us and DD was really unhappy.  We got a few good ones but I still wasn't happy.  We haven't been back.

I actually found someone who has a studio set up in her home (our wedding photographer recommended her) and I am so happy.  I set up a day and time and we just go to her house.  Even when she's busy she books each child for 1 hour (even if you only want a half hour session) so that there's time and your not rushed.

  • If you want pictures from any type of portrait studio, I think you need to book the first appt of the day. We had a similar issue about two years ago trying to get Christmas pictures done at Portrait Innovations. They ran behind schedule, they overbooked and the photographers were barely 18 years old and seemingly knew nothing about children's photography. Never again for us!!!

Now we use a local, private photographer and shoot at our convenience in a location that works for us.

But in the bigger studios, I do think it helps to book early in the day!

Brynn is a busy kid as well so for her 1 year shoot alot of the session was me going and putting her back and trying all kinds of crazy moves and sounds to keep her there. It was a professional in home photographer so whenever she seen a good shot of Brynn but I was still in the frame she would take it anyway and just edit me out. I'm not sure if portrait places edit as much? Either way, I have found over the years that typically photographers that work one on one are the way to go compared to 'store' photographers.

I found that booking the first apointment of the day requires them to be on time for you.  This helped with the crabby issue.  We too had the same issue at PI.  I actually requested another photographer take her picture and once he steped in he was able to get 3-4 good shots out of just the 10 he took.

For the walking problem we are able to sit her down and then either get her picture sitting or just as she stood up.  Or even with quick snapping from the photographer as she was walking.  We just had some done this weekend both at Target and by myself.  (went to Target just for cake smash pics, will go to PI on her BDay and I did some outdoor ones, I'm cheap and this enables me a few poses for really cheap :))  At Target I warned the photographer a head of time that she needed to work quick because DD was on the move and won't stay still long.

here are samples of what I got (as you can see she is either sitting or walking in them, and that is how all of them are):

  • We did not attempt studio photos for this reason. DS isn't even walking and just crawling it's a problem.  Because of the issues we had for his 9 month photos we were going with a personal photographer.  They are more than willing to work with you.

On another note as a PP mentioned, when we do studio photos we always book the first session of the day, even if that means it is during the week and DH can't go with me.

  • Do you have any independent photographers in your area?  It may be a bit pricier, but you won't have any of those issues. Photographers at kid centered studios are mostly paid by the hour and not necessarily "professional" photographers, so to speak. I'd book a session with an independent. He/she will work on your schedule and meet you at a location of your choosing. Just something to look into.  Check craigslist or ask Facebook friends for recommendations.

That being said, I've seen some cute shots from places like JC Penny's. They are such a huge chain, they might be more professional.

  • We did JC Penny Pics for her 3 and 6 month shots and always booked the first or second appointment of the day so they wouldn't be too far behind. It worked out well but they always rushed us through and the backdrops were never straight and were always super wrinkled in the photos (and the xmas backdrop was too long and bunched up along the floor and looked bad in the photos) However, I ended up wanting the cd at both sessions so it was just as expensive as hiring a photographer that already included those. I found a local photographer who did DD's 1 year shots outdoors and they turned out AMAZING. She is also shooting DD's bday party (3 total days of shooting and all the images edited and on cd for 300!) That's still a lot and we splurged for the 1 year portraits but had I just done one day it would have been a little over $100 for a disc of tons of edited shots on location or in her home studio - that's like going to Sears or JC Penny if you want to images on cd...
